It’s a fresh blow for the Ivory Coast camp. Two days before a big clash with Germany, Ivory Coast will have to do without Elye Wahi. Not because of an injury or a tactical call, but because of an administrative issue that is preventing the forward from entering Canada.

A betting case that keeps growing
Because over the past few days, Elye Wahi’s name has gone well beyond the pitch. First reported by The Athletic, an investigation is now focusing on what looked like a routine moment on the final day of Ligue 1.
On May 17, in the match between Nice and Metz, the forward was booked for a late tackle near the opposition corner flag. Standard stuff. Barely worth a glance. And yet investigators are now trying to work out whether the yellow card may have been picked up on purpose as part of a suspicious betting scheme.
The case quickly took on a bigger life of its own. An investigation was opened at the end of May and, according to several media reports, the player has already been questioned by French police as part of the probe. For now, no conclusions have been made public and no formal charges have been brought against him.
But in a sport where betting issues are treated as toxic, even the hint of an international player being linked to such a case is enough to cause a stir.

Ivory Coast stands by him
With questions now swirling around its striker, the Ivory Coast Football Federation has taken a clear line: back the player.
In its statement, the FIF stressed its confidence in Wahi and his importance to the Elephants squad. The governing body also says it has not received any judicial or administrative notice concerning the forward.
The message is plain enough. While speculation ramps up and the public looks for answers, the Ivory Coast side is not ready to cut ties with one of its most exciting attacking talents.
