Round 16 in the NRL kicks off with a fixture that, on paper, might look one-sided… but there is still enough going on to make it worth a look.
At Newcastle, the Knights host a Dragons side still searching for consistency and a sense of direction in a season that has struggled to get going. Yet beyond the ladder, both teams’ recent form suggests this could be a far tighter contest than it first appears.
One side is Newcastle, a team that keeps hovering around the big result without quite landing it. The other is the Dragons, capable of decent patches but far too erratic to really settle into games.
This is exactly the sort of match where intensity and discipline can decide things quickly.

The trip to Melbourne in Round 14 could have ended very differently.
Beaten 32-30 by the Storm, the Knights went agonisingly close to a major upset. Just two points down at the break, they spent long spells looking like a side with enough in the tank to rattle a team that is usually pretty good at controlling these situations.
But as has often been the case this season, Newcastle spent plenty of time fighting itself in key moments.
The numbers tell a mixed story. With only 44 % possession, the Knights spent much of the night on the back foot. Even so, they still managed to create danger, with nine line breaks and a surprisingly competitive average field position.
That is what makes this Knights side so hard to pin down.
They are close. But they are not quite polished enough yet.
The 36 missed tackles remain a glaring warning sign, especially against an opponent that will punish every slip.
Still, the overall feel is positive: Newcastle are moving forward, even if the table has not caught up yet.

After a decent first half in which they led 12-6, St George Illawarra vanished after the interval, copping a 34-12 second-half blowout with no reply.
That lack of consistency sums up their season perfectly.
They can start well enough, but once the tempo rises, the Dragons struggle to keep pace. The physical gap and the drop-off in attacking precision become too much to absorb.
The numbers back that up: less possession, a decent completion rate but not enough to survive against better-drilled teams, and a defence that gets shaky when the game opens up.
The good news is that the trip to Newcastle gives them another chance to test themselves in a ground that has not exactly been kind to them over the years.
The Dragons have only won once this season and remain under pressure near the bottom, but they can still scrap out performances if their discipline holds for long enough.
