Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Cardiff City: fourth place against a side without an away win Championship

Cardiff City are one of three Championship clubs still waiting for an away win this season. Six league trips have brought two draws and four defeats, six goals scored and 11 conceded.

At the Cardiff City Stadium it’s a different side. Brian Barry-Murphy’s team beat Charlton 3-1 and Watford 5-1 there this autumn, then Birmingham 1-0 last Saturday, and they’re unbeaten at home in the league.

Saturday’s game is at Molineux, kick-off 3pm UK time on 31 October. Wolves are fourth with 21 points from 12 games, six wins, three draws and three defeats, and within two points of the automatic promotion places.

Cesar Peixoto’s side have taken seven points from their last three league games and won 1-0 at home to Watford last weekend. Cardiff are 16th with 14 points, six clear of the bottom three and six behind the play-off places.

The record at Molineux since 2004 is level: five Wolves wins, five Cardiff wins and one draw in 11 league meetings. The most recent finished 2-0 to Wolves in March 2019, when both clubs were in the Premier League.

Wolves are 1.62 to win, the draw is 4.00 and Cardiff 4.75. Both teams to score is 1.50 and Wolves draw no bet 1.29. I’d take the home win at the bigger price, and the away record above is most of the reason.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: one goal margins and a defence among the division’s better ones Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves haven’t scored more than twice in any of their last ten matches in all competitions. In the last six league games they beat West Brom 1-0, lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough and 3-1 at home to Bolton, won 2-1 at Burnley, drew 1-1 with Portsmouth and beat Watford 1-0.

Wolves have conceded one fewer league goal than leaders Middlesbrough, and at Molineux they’ve won three, drawn two and lost one, scoring ten and conceding seven with two clean sheets.

Marvelous Munetsi, Jordan James and Adam Armstrong have two league goals each, Ladislav Krejci and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde one, and Andre has two assists from midfield.

Peixoto can change the attack this week, with Fer Lopez and Mateus Mane pushing to return to the starting line-up, which could mean Rafiki Said and James dropping out.

Nasser Djiga and Rodrigo Gomes are both close to returning from injury, though the bench is the more likely place for them on Saturday. Kieran Trippier is in the predicted line-up at right-back.

Against sides below them in the table, Wolves have won six, drawn three and lost one of ten games, and they’ve scored in every one of those matches.

Over their last ten matches in all competitions, Wolves created 1.58 expected goals a game and allowed 1.27, kept three clean sheets and saw both teams score in half of those games.

Cardiff City: Moylan’s six goals and no away win in six Cardiff City

Jack Moylan has six league goals, the most at the club, and three assists. Oliver Tanner has set up four, Yousef Salech has three goals, and that group accounts for most of Cardiff’s attacking output. Two of Moylan’s goals came in the 5-1 win over Watford on 13 October.

The last six league results read: 1-0 at Bolton, 3-1 against Charlton, 2-1 at Blackburn, 5-1 against Watford, 2-2 at Middlesbrough and 1-0 against Birmingham. The three wins all came at home, and the away games produced one point.

Over their last ten matches, Cardiff averaged 2.2 points per game at home and 0.2 on the road, with 1.6 goals scored and 1.4 conceded per game across the whole run.

Gabriel Osho is available again after his suspension, though he may start on the bench. David Turnbull and Chris Willock are in contention for places, while Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Rubin Colwill remain out.

Barry-Murphy is expected to name Trott in goal behind Ng, Fish, Bagan and Scanlon, with Robertson and Moylan in midfield and Salech up front.

Against the sides above them in the table, Cardiff have won one, drawn three and lost three of seven, scoring eight and conceding 11.

Cardiff create plenty, with 1.99 expected goals per game over their last ten matches, but they also allow 1.51. Both teams have scored in seven of those ten games, and the 1-0 against Birmingham was their only clean sheet in that spell.

Probable lineup Wolverhampton Wanderers: Sa; Trippier, Mosquera, Krejci, Bueno; Andre, Munetsi; Bellegarde, Lopez, Mane; Armstrong
Probable lineup Cardiff City: Trott; Ng, Fish, Bagan, Scanlon; Robertson, Moylan; Tanner, J. Colwill, Willock; Salech

Our prediction: Wolverhampton Wanderers to win (odds 1.62)

I’d back Wolves at 1.62. They’re fourth, they’ve lost once at home all season, and Cardiff have collected two points from six away games.

Moylan is in form and Wolves rarely win by more than one goal. Neither point puts me off a home win, because a 1-0 or 2-1 pays the same as a 3-0. If Cardiff score, which they have in seven of their last ten, Wolves have shown they can find a second, as they did in the 2-1 win at Burnley, and they’ve scored ten league goals in six home games at Molineux this season.

Wolves have scored in all ten of their games against sides below them and won six. Cardiff’s away record gives me no reason to expect that to change.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
