Stade Francais kick off their 2026/2027 season on Saturday 5 September at 19h05 by hosting USA Perpignan at Stade Jean-Bouin. The game is part of the opening-day Top 14 multiplex.
These are two clubs coming off seasons that could hardly have looked more different. The Parisians finished 3rd, while the Catalans ended up 13th and needed a relegation play-off to stay up.
Stade Francais have just come through a season of recovery after brushing against relegation in 2025. That turnaround was enough to put them on the regular-season podium.
Perpignan, by contrast, remain stuck in survival mode since their return to the top flight. The club has now had to go through the relegation play-off four times since 2021.
The stated targets tell the story. Paris are aiming for the play-offs and will also have to juggle the Champions Cup, while USAP are once again focused first and foremost on survival.
One number sums up the mismatch on this one. Perpignan failed to win a single away match last season, going 13 from 13 on the road.
Against that, Paris’ home record is every bit as striking. Jean-Bouin has become one of the toughest places to go in the league.
The opening weekend wrinkle is the usual one: teams still finding their rhythm and systems not yet fully in place. That is about the only way USAP can hope to get a foothold against Stade Francais.

The play-offs backed it up. Stade Francais battered La Rochelle in front of their own fans before running into Montpellier in the semi-final.
That run was built on a home ground that was rarely breached. Eleven wins, one draw and just one defeat at Jean-Bouin gave them the 3rd-best home record in the league.
One defeat in 13 home games is no small feat. It is the key argument in this match-up.
Gustard remains in charge this season, so there is no need for a reset. The basic patterns laid down last year should still be there.
There is one concern, though, and it sits in the calendar. This season brings Champions Cup duty, with all the squad management that comes with it.
But that is not a factor in early September. On opening day, Stade Francais can pick their strongest side without looking over their shoulder.

Perpignan go again with survival as the only real target 
Since returning to the top flight in 2021, USA Perpignan have had to fight a relegation play-off four times. That says plenty about the reality of life for the Catalan club in the Top 14.
Last season followed the same script, starting in disastrous fashion. It took them ages to find anything close to a proper rhythm.
The arrival of coach Labit on the bench gave them a lift. It came too late to change the nature of the season, but just in time to avoid the worst of it.
USAP eventually finished 13th in the Top 14, 22 points behind 12th. They were also 22 points clear of bottom, which left them in the play-off.
They then secured safety with a big win away to Provence Rugby. It saved the season, but it did nothing to hide the shortcomings over the previous ten months.
The heaviest stat is the away record. Thirteen trips, 13 defeats, the worst away return in the league.
No team can honestly aim for much beyond survival with numbers like that on the road. It sets the tone for this trip to Paris.
The public target for the new season is simple: stay up. Going to the reigning semi-finalists and expecting points is not part of any realistic plan.

Our prediction: Stade Francais to win by more than 11 points
The two sets of numbers leave little doubt about how this should play out. A side that lost just once in 13 home games welcomes a team that lost all 13 of its away matches.
This is not a one-off blip. It ran through the whole of last season, and nothing we have seen suggests USAP have fixed the problem over the summer.
Stade Francais also have every reason to start fast. They will want to back up their 3rd-place finish and they head into a Champions Cup season, which makes a strong league start even more important.
Perpignan can scrap for a half, as they showed at times last season. The bigger question is whether they can keep going after the hour, and their away form last year offered no real evidence they can.
So the call is for a clear Paris win, not a scrape. Anything over 11 points feels like the most honest reading of the balance of power.
