St Johnstone vs Motherwell: six straight defeats for a side that finished fourth last season
Motherwell have lost their last six Scottish Premiership games. The run began with a 1-0 defeat at Rangers on 5 September and reached six on Sunday, when Hearts won 2-0 at Fir Park through goals from Braga on 29 minutes and Miller on 86.
It’s a sharp fall for a club that finished fourth last season and went into Europe. Alfred Johansson’s side were unbeaten in their first four league games, then scored three and conceded 14 across the six defeats, and they now sit tenth with eight points, one above Hibernian at the bottom.
Their next stop is McDiarmid Park on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 19:45 UK time. St Johnstone are eighth with 12 points from three wins, three draws and four defeats, back in the top flight after winning the Championship by 11 points last season.
Simo Valakari’s side have done most of their work at home. Eight of their 12 points have come in Perth, where they’ve lost only once, and Josh Fowler has six league goals, joint top of the Premiership scoring chart.
The prices don’t reflect the gap in form. Bookmakers have St Johnstone at around 2.45 and Motherwell at around 2.57, a near coin-toss that seems to rest more on last season’s table than on anything Motherwell have done since early September.
St Johnstone: Fowler’s six goals and a home record that holds up
Fowler has scored six of St Johnstone’s league goals, and nobody else at the club has more than one. Diabate and Alic are next with a goal each, so the attack depends heavily on one forward finding space.
The home results back up the eight-points figure. In Perth they’ve drawn 1-1 with both Falkirk and Dundee United, and their only home defeat was a 1-0 to Celtic on 9 September.
They also won 1-0 at Aberdeen on 11 October, but Saturday’s trip to Ibrox went badly. Rangers won 4-0, Kelsy scored twice, and Kai Fotheringham was sent off with a straight red card.
Fotheringham is suspended for Wednesday as a result. Zach Mitchell has gone back to Charlton with a season-ending knee injury, but Bozo Mikulic is available again after injury.
The probable side has Steward in goal behind Smith, Finlayson and Diabate, with Steven, McAlear, Cotterill and Alic in midfield and Gullan and Campbell supporting Fowler.
The record in this fixture favours the hosts. In league meetings in Perth since 2013, St Johnstone have won ten, drawn seven and lost four, and when the sides met here in January 2025, Steven and Mikulic scored late as St Johnstone came from behind to win 2-1.

Motherwell: 0.20 points per game away from home with Hendry, McGinn and Priestman missing
The away numbers are the hardest part to defend. Motherwell have averaged 0.20 points per game away from home over their last ten in all competitions, and they’ve lost their last three away league games, at Rangers, Dundee and Kilmarnock.
The 3-2 defeat at Rugby Park on 17 October was the closest of them. Alex Lowry and Palmer-Houlden scored, but Greg Kiltie’s two goals for Kilmarnock decided it.
Lowry is Motherwell’s top league scorer with three goals, two of them in his last three games. Palmer-Houlden has two, and Sparrow and Maswanhise have two assists each.
The injury list makes Johansson’s job harder. Callum Hendry and Paul McGinn are out with knee injuries, Oscar Priestman is expected to miss the game with a calf problem, and Dylan Williams faces a late fitness test on a hamstring injury after missing three games.
The cup results haven’t helped confidence either. Motherwell went out of the League Cup to Stenhousemuir, losing 1-0, and lost 7-2 on aggregate to SC Freiburg in the Conference League play-off.
They’ve conceded in each of their last five league games, and across their last ten in all competitions they’ve let in 2.40 goals per game.
Probable lineup St Johnstone: Steward; Smith, Finlayson, Diabate; Steven, McAlear, Cotterill, Alic; Gullan, Campbell; Fowler
Probable lineup Motherwell: Paulsen; Sparrow, Girdwood-Reich, Moormann, Longelo; Fadinger, Levitt; Maswanhise, Lowry, Hodge; Palmer-Houlden

Our prediction: St Johnstone to win (2.45)
St Johnstone at 2.45 is the price I’d take. They’ve lost once at home all season, they have the joint top scorer in the division, and they face a side that has lost six league games in a row and three straight away from home.
Motherwell have conceded 14 goals in those six defeats and travel without Hendry, McGinn and probably Priestman. Their 0.20 points per game on the road over ten matches is the number I keep coming back to.
Fotheringham’s suspension and the 4-0 at Ibrox are the case against, and Motherwell did win the last meeting, 1-0 in the League Cup in August 2025. Even so, a home side with eight points from its games in Perth against a visitor without a league point in six games makes St Johnstone the pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
