Dundee vs Kilmarnock: Fink’s scoring run against a defence that has shipped 23 Scottish Premiership

Bradley Fink has four Scottish Premiership goals this season, and all four have come in his last five games. One of them opened the scoring in Dundee’s 2-2 draw with Rangers at Dens Park on 17 October.

Kilmarnock come to Dens Park on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 19:45 UK time, having conceded 23 goals in ten league games, and Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Falkirk included two own goals.

The table puts the sides six points apart. Dundee are fifth with 14 points from four wins, two draws and four defeats, while Kilmarnock are 11th with eight points, one above Hibernian at the bottom.

Steven Pressley’s team lost 2-1 at St Mirren on Saturday, but the defeat came after a draw with Rangers and a 2-1 win at Falkirk, and their games have been open. Both teams have scored in each of Dundee’s last six matches, and those six have averaged three goals.

The head-to-head points the same way. The last six meetings have averaged a little over three goals, both sides scored in five of them, and Dundee have lost only one of their last seven home games against Kilmarnock.

Dundee: open games at Dens Park, and a striker in form Dundee

The Rangers game showed both sides of Dundee. Fink put them ahead, Bouanani equalised, Raskin made it 2-1 to the visitors, and Callum Jones intercepted a Dan Neil pass to score the equaliser.

Dundee also took a point at Ibrox earlier in the season, a 1-1 in which Ryan Astley scored and Rangers needed a stoppage-time penalty to draw level.

The home record is less convincing. Dundee have beaten Aberdeen 2-0 and Motherwell 2-1 at Dens Park, drawn with St Johnstone and Rangers and lost 2-1 to Hibernian, so a win on Wednesday would be only their third at home this season.

Pressley’s squad is thin in places. Finlay Robertson and Jack Moorhouse are out for the season with cruciate ligament injuries, Simon Murray is likely to miss the rest of the campaign with the same problem, and Bobby Wales and Joe Westley are doubtful with ankle injuries.

The probable side has Goodman in goal behind Wright, Astley, O. Bevan and Samuels, with J. Bevan, Jones, Hamilton and Forrest in midfield and Hay alongside Fink in attack.

The goals have been spread around that group, with Fink, Jones and Astley all scoring against Rangers this season. Dundee have scored 14 and conceded 12 in ten league games.

Kilmarnock: 23 conceded in ten games, and a goalkeeper missing until December Kilmarnock

Neil McCann’s side lost their first four league games of the season and have lost six of ten overall. They’ve scored ten and conceded 23, a goal difference of minus 13.

The defeat at Falkirk on Saturday was played in wind and torrential rain. McCarthy turned the ball into his own net on 29 minutes, Murrell headed a second before half-time, and George Stanger scored a second own goal after the break.

A week earlier Kilmarnock beat Motherwell 3-2 at Rugby Park. Greg Kiltie scored after two minutes and again on 69, Tyreece John-Jules added the other, and the win took them off the bottom of the table.

Kiltie is the only Kilmarnock player with more than one league goal this season. Without a Kiltie goal at Falkirk, Kilmarnock didn’t score at all, and they’ve managed ten goals in ten league games.

The goalkeeping situation adds to it. Maksymilian Stryjek has a serious knee injury and isn’t expected back until about mid-December, loan signing Nico Mantl hasn’t played yet, and Ferrie started in goal at Falkirk.

The away record offers a little hope. Kilmarnock won 1-0 at Hibernian on 15 September and drew 0-0 at Aberdeen, but they’ve lost their last two trips, 3-1 at Rangers and 3-0 at Falkirk.

Probable lineup Dundee: Goodman; Wright, Astley, O. Bevan, Samuels; J. Bevan, Jones, Hamilton, Forrest; Hay, Fink
Probable lineup Kilmarnock: Ferrie; Brandon, McCarthy, Stanger, Schjonning-Larsen; Tshibola, Lowery; Ring, John-Jules, Kiltie; Hugill

Our prediction: Dundee to win (1.91)

I’d back Dundee at 1.91. Kilmarnock have conceded 23 goals in ten league games, they’re on to their second-choice goalkeeper, and they’ve just lost 3-0 at a Falkirk side that sits below Dundee in the table.

Dundee have the form player in Fink, with four goals in his last five games, and they’ve taken points from Rangers twice this season. Their record against Kilmarnock at Dens Park, one defeat in seven, supports the home win.

The worry is Dundee’s own defence: both teams have scored in each of their last six games, and Kilmarnock won 3-1 when the sides last met in May. A goal for the visitors wouldn’t surprise me, but I expect Dundee to score more than once against a back line that has let in 23.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
