Santa Clara vs Gil Vicente: eight visits to Sao Miguel without a Gil Vicente win Liga Portugal

Gil Vicente last won at the Estadio de Sao Miguel in September 2015, by 2-0. They’ve been back eight times since without winning, and the last four of those trips ended in defeat, which is the record they take to the Azores on Sunday 8 November, kick-off 15:30 UK time.

Both clubs have started this Primeira Liga season well, and that gives the game more weight than the fixture usually carries. Santa Clara are fourth with 21 points from ten games, level with third-placed Sporting CP, and a win would take them within a point of Benfica in second.

Gil Vicente are seventh on 15 points, with four wins, three draws and three defeats. They come in after a goalless draw with Vitoria de Guimaraes, a result that stretched a run without a win to three games in all competitions.

What links the two sides is a lack of goals in their recent meetings. The last three games between them produced three goals in total: Gil Vicente won 1-0 on 3 November 2025, and Santa Clara won 1-0 at home on 21 March. Across 22 meetings Santa Clara lead with ten wins to Gil Vicente’s six, with six draws.

The prices reflect a home side expected to edge it. Santa Clara are available at 1.53 on the draw no bet, both teams to score “no” is at 1.70, and under 2.5 goals is priced at 1.50.

Santa Clara: six goals conceded in ten league games, the second-best record in the division Santa Clara

The change from last season is striking. Santa Clara finished 13th, their lowest league position since they were relegated in 2023, and ten games into this one they’ve won six and drawn three under Petit.

The defence has done most of the work. Santa Clara have conceded six league goals and kept five clean sheets, and only Porto, the leaders, have let in fewer, with four.

That record took a knock in late October. They lost 3-2 after extra time to Mafra in the Taca de Portugal third round on 18 October, then lost 2-1 at home to Benfica eight days later for their first league defeat of the season.

Last Sunday’s 2-0 win at Maritimo was a return to the pattern that got them to fourth. Maritimo missed several clear chances, but Tiago Ribeiro scored in one half and Vinicius Lopes in the other, and Santa Clara kept a fifth league clean sheet.

Two players are missing. Midfielder Pedro Ferreira sits out a second straight game after picking up an injury against Benfica on 26 October, and defender Matheus Araujo is still working his way back from the serious knee injury he suffered last December.

Gil Vicente: two away wins in a row, and only eight league goals all season Gil Vicente

Luis Pinto’s side opened October with three straight wins, including a 3-2 extra-time win over Uniao Santarem in the Taca de Portugal on 14 October. Since then they’ve gone three games without a win, losing twice and drawing once.

One of those defeats was heavy. Benfica beat them 4-1 in the Taca da Liga on 29 October, and that’s the only time in this run that Gil Vicente have conceded more than once.

The away form is the encouraging part for Pinto. Gil Vicente won their last two league games on the road, against Moreirense and Braga, and those results are a big reason they’re seventh rather than in the bottom half.

The goals are the concern. Gil Vicente have scored eight league goals in ten games and conceded seven, so their matches have averaged 1.5 goals, and even in a good start they’ve rarely been involved in open games.

The squad is short in a few places. Midfielder Mohamed Bamba has been out since January with a serious knee injury, French defender Arthur Tchaptchet is still sidelined, and Jose Silva went off injured late against Guimaraes and won’t make the trip, with Weverson expected to come in.

Probable lineup Santa Clara: Neneca; Soares, Pacheco, Fernandes, Romao; Borges, Ribeiro, Tavares; Lopes, Fernando, Brenner
Probable lineup Gil Vicente: Not announced at time of publication (Jose Silva ruled out, Weverson expected to start)

Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals at 1.50

Both teams’ numbers point to a low-scoring afternoon. Santa Clara have conceded six league goals in ten games, Gil Vicente’s league matches have produced 15 goals in total, and the last three meetings between the clubs produced three goals.

I considered the home win, since Gil Vicente’s record at this ground is so poor. The risk is that Pinto’s side have just won twice on the road and are well organised enough to take a point, so I’d rather back the shape of the game than the winner.

The one argument against the under is the 4-1 defeat to Benfica, but that came in a cup tie against Benfica, and Santa Clara have scored 15 league goals in ten games, a rate that rarely puts a match beyond two goals on its own. Under 2.5 goals at 1.50 is our pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
