A caretaker who knows his place
Jorge Maciel has been in charge of Lyon since Paulo Fonseca left, and he is not pretending it will last. Speaking on Saturday before Sunday’s trip to Brest, the former assistant said a new head coach is on the way and that he will step back once the appointment is made, probably during the international break.
“Personally, I can’t wait for tomorrow night so I can spend a little time with my family. That’s my future,” Maciel said with a smile. He told reporters he had spoken to sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean and that he would keep a place in the staff under whoever arrives. “My future will be to help the coach,” he added.
The whole backroom team, he said, has stayed professional through an awkward spell: “Everyone is irreproachable and doing their best so the team performs.”

Points on the board in San Sebastian
Maciel joined Lyon in the summer of 2024 and is only briefly in the spotlight. His side picked up a useful point on Thursday in the Europa League, drawing 1-1 at Real Sociedad. Lyon now go to Francis-Le Blé for matchday 10 of Ligue 1 hoping to build on it.
He also kept a sense of perspective about the job. “The suitcases are always packed,” Maciel said. “That’s coaching. Whether you’re the head coach or an assistant, it’s part of the game, and I take it well.”
Vicens in the frame
On RMC’s After Foot show, Daniel Riolo said Spaniard Carlos Vicens “holds the rope” to take over at Lyon in the coming days. Vicens previously coached Braga and worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Lyon have not confirmed anything, so for now this remains a report, and Maciel stays in the dugout.
