Paderborn vs Stuttgart – Free Football Prediction

Paderborn vs Stuttgart: last season’s beaten finalists back at a ground where they won 18 days ago

Stuttgart lost the DFB-Pokal final 3-0 to Bayern Munich in Berlin on 23 May, with Harry Kane scoring all three goals in the second half. Their route back towards the Olympiastadion now runs through Paderborn, the same ground where they won 2-0 in the Bundesliga on 10 October.

Kick-off is 17:00 UK time on Wednesday 28 October at the Home Deluxe Arena, which holds around 15,000. A draw after 90 minutes goes to extra time and then penalties. Both sides came through the first round comfortably in August, Stuttgart winning 4-0 at Hansa Rostock and Paderborn 4-2 at Phonix Lubeck.

The league table gives the home side more reason for optimism than it did a few weeks ago. Paderborn are 12th on eight points, two places and two points above Stuttgart, who sit 15th with two wins and five defeats from seven games. Ralf Kettemann’s side are unbeaten in their last two, while Stuttgart have lost four of their last five league matches.

That slump has a European context. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side are unbeaten in the Champions League with seven points from three games, and the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on 20 October came three days before a 3-2 home defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach. Stuttgart go to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday and then to Galatasaray on 3 November.

That run of fixtures makes rotation likely, and it’s one reason the result market looks less certain than the prices imply. Bookmakers have Stuttgart at 1.57 to win in 90 minutes, with the draw at 4.50 and Paderborn at 5.90.

The goals markets lean towards an open game, with over 2.5 at 1.57 and both teams to score at 1.70. Recent evidence on both sides supports that second line, and it’s the one this preview ends up backing.

SC Paderborn: two goals at Bremen, a late winner against Hamburg SC Paderborn

Paderborn have scored six league goals all season and failed to score in four of their seven games. In the other three they beat Hoffenheim 3-1, led 2-0 at Werder Bremen and beat Hamburger SV 1-0 on Saturday.

The Bremen game on 17 October showed both sides of them. Stefano Marino scored after 18 minutes from a Steffen Tigges assist, Tigges made it 2-0 on the half hour, and then Niclas Fullkrug scored twice in six minutes after the break, the second from the penalty spot after a handball by Curda. Goalkeeper Noll made several saves to hold the 2-2.

Against Hamburg, Kettemann used a 3-5-2 with Noll behind ter Horst, Scheller and Hansen, and Marino and Tigges up front. Curda hit the post after 73 minutes, and Rayan Philippe, on as a substitute, scored the winner with two minutes left after a move through Felix Gotze.

The home defeat to Stuttgart is the most relevant result. Jeff Chabot put the visitors in front after 25 minutes and Chris Fuhrich added a second on 83, both from Angelo Stiller deliveries, while Stuttgart goalkeeper Dennis Seimen made six saves to keep Paderborn out.

Those six saves matter for Wednesday. Paderborn created enough that afternoon to score, and their bench has already won one game this month, with Philippe, Gotze and Sven Michel all used as substitutes against Hamburg.

VfB Stuttgart: unbeaten in Europe, four defeats in five in the league VfB Stuttgart

Stuttgart’s season has split in two. In the Champions League they’ve beaten Viking 3-1, with a hat-trick from Ermedin Demirovic, won 3-0 at Slovan Bratislava and drawn with Atletico Madrid. In the Bundesliga they’ve lost at Hoffenheim, at home to Dortmund, 1-0 at Hamburg on 17 October and 3-2 at home to Gladbach on Friday.

The Gladbach defeat was the most worrying of those. Demirovic scored after five minutes, but Joe Scally equalised before half-time, Shuto Machino put Gladbach ahead on 51 minutes and 17-year-old Wael Mohya made it 3-1 on 66. Demirovic’s second, seven minutes from time, only reduced the margin, and it was Gladbach’s first win of the season.

Defending has been the weakness. Stuttgart have conceded 13 league goals in seven games, and in their last eight matches in all competitions only Slovan Bratislava and Paderborn have failed to score against them.

Angelo Stiller, who set up both goals in Paderborn this month, needed treatment after a head collision with Hugo Bolin against Gladbach. Ameen Al-Dakhil (knee) and Justin Diehl (quadriceps) were both ruled out before the Atletico game, while Dan-Axel Zagadou, Tiago Tomas and Nikolas Nartey were listed as doubts.

Against Gladbach, Hoeneß went with Seimen in goal behind Assignon, Jeltsch, Hendriks and Mittelstadt, with Karazor and Stiller in midfield and Sauer, Pejcinovic and Fuhrich behind Demirovic. With Leverkusen and Galatasaray to come, that side is unlikely to start in full on Wednesday.

Probable lineup SC Paderborn: Not announced at time of publication (Saturday’s side: Noll; ter Horst, Scheller, Hansen; Curda, Ulrich, Castaneda, Vidovic, Obermair; Marino, Tigges)
Probable lineup VfB Stuttgart: Not announced at time of publication (rotation expected before Leverkusen and Galatasaray)

Free Football Prediction: Paderborn vs Stuttgart

Our prediction: Both teams to score @ 1.70

Stuttgart have conceded in six of their last eight games, including three at home to the bottom side on Friday, and their back line is short of Al-Dakhil with Zagadou in doubt. Paderborn have scored three times in their last two league games, and they forced six saves out of Seimen in the league meeting this month.

Stuttgart’s attack should do its part. Demirovic scored a hat-trick against Viking and twice against Gladbach, and Stuttgart have scored in six of their last eight matches. Even a rotated side has Undav, Fuhrich and El Khannouss to call on.

The argument against is the 2-0 here on 10 October, when Paderborn didn’t score. I’d still expect a different game this time, with Stuttgart’s defence weaker than it was then and Paderborn in better form. Both teams to score at 1.70 is the pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
