Borussia Monchengladbach vs Karlsruher SC: the same tie, the same round, a year on Fichier:DFB-Pokal logo 2016.svg — Wikipédia

Borussia Monchengladbach beat Karlsruher SC 3-1 in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on 28 October 2025, with Shuto Machino, Nico Elvedi and Haris Tabakovic scoring in front of 48,023 at Borussia-Park. Almost a year to the day later, the draw has sent the same two clubs to the same ground at the same stage.

Kick-off is 19:45 UK time on Tuesday 27 October. A draw after 90 minutes means extra time and, if necessary, penalties. The gap between the sides last October was clear on the night: Gladbach finished with 25 shots to Karlsruhe’s eight, and Fabian Schleusener’s goal was the visitors’ only reply.

The context this time is less comfortable for the hosts. Gladbach are bottom of the Bundesliga with three points from seven games, and they’ve conceded 22 league goals, more than anyone in the division. Alexander Blessin, appointed on 22 September, only got his first league win on Friday night.

That win matters because of how it came. Gladbach went to Stuttgart, fell behind after five minutes and still won 3-2, ending a run of six straight league defeats. It’s the first evidence that Blessin’s side can turn chances into points.

Karlsruhe arrive in worse shape. Maximilian Senft’s side are 15th in the 2. Bundesliga with eight points from nine games and a goal difference of minus nine, and on Saturday they lost 6-1 at Magdeburg, four of the goals coming in a 15-minute spell after half-time.

Bookmakers have Gladbach between 1.30 and 1.40 to win in 90 minutes, which leaves little value in the straight result. The handicap market is more interesting: Gladbach to win by two goals or more is available at 1.78, and that’s where this preview ends up.

Borussia Monchengladbach: a first league win, but a goal conceded in every game Borussia Monchengladbach

Gladbach’s league run before Friday was grim. They lost 5-0 at Freiburg on 12 September, 4-3 at home to Mainz a week later, 2-1 at Koln on 11 October and 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim on 18 October. Blessin took over on 22 September, and the defeats continued for his first weeks in the job.

The win in Stuttgart showed a sharper side. Joe Scally equalised before half-time, Machino put Gladbach ahead six minutes into the second half, and 17-year-old Wael Mohya made it 3-1 on 66 minutes. Stuttgart’s late goal from Ermedin Demirovic only cut the margin.

Defending remains the weakness. Gladbach have conceded in all seven Bundesliga games, and their three league home matches have produced 17 goals, seven scored and ten conceded, with both teams scoring every time.

The injury list is long. Tim Kleindienst is out with a thigh muscle tear, Ko Itakura picked up a muscle injury on international duty with Japan, and Jan Leszczynski (knee), Jens Castrop (shoulder surgery) and Enzo Leopold (cruciate ligament) are all missing. Fritz Fleck, Franck Honorat and Nicolas Kuhn are doubts, while Kevin Diks and Isac Lidberg also sat out the Stuttgart game.

Gladbach did reach this round convincingly, winning 5-0 at TSV Schott Mainz in August. Blessin is expected to keep most of the side that won on Friday, with Moritz Nicolas in goal.

Karlsruher SC: six conceded at Magdeburg, and no Broschinski until the new year Karlsruher SC

Karlsruhe went into Saturday’s game in Magdeburg on the back of their best result of the season, a 4-0 home win over Darmstadt on 18 October that ended a six-match winless run in the league. They trailed 1-0 at half-time in Magdeburg, conceded four times between the 51st and 66th minutes and lost 6-1, with Deniz Ofli scoring the consolation.

The Darmstadt win aside, goals have been hard to find. Karlsruhe failed to score in league defeats to Energie Cottbus (3-0 on 13 September), Nurnberg (1-0 on 19 September) and St. Pauli (2-0 on 11 October), and they managed only two goals in the four league games before Darmstadt.

The defence has been leakier still. Senft’s side have let in 20 goals in nine league games, an average of 2.2 per match, and they’ll be without striker Moritz Broschinski, who had surgery on a syndesmosis injury and isn’t expected back before the end of the year.

Heliton is also missing with a muscle injury and is only training on his own. Goalkeeper Hans Christian Bernat had lumbago before the Magdeburg game, and his availability for Tuesday hasn’t been confirmed.

Karlsruhe did come from behind in the first round, trailing at half-time before winning 2-1 at Preussen Munster. Captain Marvin Wanitzek, Noel Eichinger and Shio Fukuda are the players most likely to supply whatever threat they carry, and over 48 competitive meetings Gladbach lead the head-to-head with 18 wins to Karlsruhe’s 13, with 17 draws.

Our prediction: Borussia Monchengladbach -1.5 handicap (win by two goals or more) @ 1.78

Karlsruhe have conceded 20 goals in nine second-division games, six of them on Saturday, and they’ve failed to score in three of their last five league matches. Without Broschinski and possibly without their first-choice goalkeeper, they come to Borussia-Park with fewer answers than they had in last year’s 3-1 defeat here.

Gladbach’s own record at the back is the reason not to take a clean sheet. They’ve conceded in every league game, so the bet needs them to score at least three or keep Karlsruhe to nothing, and a 3-1 repeat of last October would be enough. The seven goals in three league home games, plus three in Stuttgart on Friday, suggest the attack can manage it even without Kleindienst.

The straight win at 1.30 to 1.40 offers too little, and the handicap at 1.78 asks Gladbach to do what they did against this opponent a year ago. Gladbach -1.5 is the pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
