New York Liberty vs Atlanta Dream: two records split by three wins with the clock ticking down
The WNBA regular season ends on 24 September and the playoffs begin on 27 September. So this Liberty-Dream clash lands just three days before the curtain comes down, in an Eastern Conference where the pecking order still isn’t set.
The schedule explains plenty of the tension. The league returned on 17 September after the FIBA World Cup, which has crammed the finish of a 44-game season into a tiny window.
Atlanta was 27-14 before hosting Chicago on Saturday. The Dream made short work of it, rolling to a 106-81 win in 40 minutes and arriving in Brooklyn with the better of the two records.
New York, by contrast, stood at 25-16 before Sunday’s trip to Toronto. Three wins separate them in the standings, but the last 10 days have made that gap look a lot less convincing.
On Friday, the Liberty went into Target Center and beat Minnesota 93-81, toppling the team with the best record in the league on its own floor. Breanna Stewart led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals.
Both teams are already through, so the battle is all about seeding. The first round is a best-of-three, with home-court advantage for the higher seed in Games 1 and 3. Every place gained means one more game at home.
Tip-off is at Barclays Center at 02:00 Paris time, in the early hours of Monday into Tuesday, live on Peacock. Home-court edge is the first place to start with in the prediction.
New York Liberty: a team that just knocked off the league’s best record
Before Sunday’s trip to Toronto, New York were 25-16, with 11 wins in 21 games away from Brooklyn. In other words, most of their cushion has been built at home.
That split matters in a game like this. Back at Barclays Center, they are operating in the setting that has brought them 14 of their 25 wins this season.
Friday’s result makes the case even stronger. Beating Minnesota 93-81 on its own court, against the team leading the overall standings, is not the sort of win you shrug off.
Breanna Stewart drove that performance with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. That double-double came with real defensive bite, and in a tight possession game that counts for plenty.
The schedule is the obvious catch. Minnesota on Friday, Toronto on Sunday, Atlanta on Monday: three games in four days, two of them on the road, before getting back to Brooklyn.
That kind of run can show up in the late rotations for New York. Still, it’s less punishing than doing the whole thing away from home.
The key point is simple: a team that can go into the league leaders’ building and win now gets to return to its best environment. That’s exactly where the Liberty have done most of their damage.
Try it for $0.99.
Atlanta Dream: two blowouts, but against the bottom half
Atlanta came in at 27-14 before hosting Chicago, with 14 wins in 21 games at State Farm Arena. Their record is the stronger of the two, and there’s no arguing with that.
On Saturday, Atlanta brushed Chicago aside 106-81 in front of their own fans. Three days earlier, in their first game back after the international break, they had already blown out Connecticut Sun 103-59 in College Park.
Both results need context. Chicago and Connecticut are among the league’s weaker sides, and neither one is anything like a trip to Brooklyn.
Angel Reese was the key figure in the win over the Sun, scoring 30 points, 19 of them in the first two quarters. The forward remains the anchor of this attack in the paint.
The scoring output across those two games, 103 and then 106 points, says a team came back from the break with no real rust. Not many sides have found their shooting touch that quickly.
The real problem is the step up in class. Going from two games that were basically over by half-time to a road clash with a top team demands a very different defensive standard.
Atlanta’s home-away split is also real: 14 of their 27 wins have come at State Farm Arena. On Monday night, they lose the safety net that has underpinned half their season.
WNBA prediction New York Liberty vs Atlanta Dream
Our prediction: New York Liberty to win
New York produced the more meaningful result of the two teams in the recent run, beating the league’s best record 93-81 on Friday. Atlanta, in the same stretch, beat two teams from the lower end of the table.
The Liberty also bring this one back to the floor where they’re at their most reliable, with only 11 of their 25 wins coming on the road. Atlanta, meanwhile, leaves behind the building where it has picked up 14 of its 27 victories.
The stakes don’t split them either, since every place gained is worth an extra home game in round one. Both teams have every reason to go full tilt here.
The standings lean Atlanta, but the match-up leans New York. The call is for a Liberty win at Barclays Center.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our free picks
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it really isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need for everyday life. And above all: don’t chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking too much space in your life, if it irritates you or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what they’re there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, no matter how good the analysis is.

No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Put simply: you cannot use them to claim anything back if a bet loses.
Information changes
A prediction always depends on what we know at the time it is written. But in the meantime, a lineup can change (like New York Liberty’s, for example), a player can get injured, the weather can turn… and the analysis can quickly go out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, check that betting is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
