CD Nacional vs Braga: two new men in the dugout, six straight league defeats for the hosts Liga Portugal

Carlos Vicens left Braga on Tuesday after four games without a win. Two days later Braga beat Gent 2-0 in the Conference League, with Victor Gomez scoring in the third minute and Gabri Martinez adding the second after the break.

Franclim Carvalho is the man taking over. He’s 39, he was Artur Jorge’s assistant and he has coached Botafogo, and his first league game is a trip to Madeira on Sunday, kick-off 18:00 UK time at the Estadio da Madeira in Funchal. Braga won there 3-0 in September 2024 and 2-1 in February this year.

Nacional are in a worse state. They’re 16th with four points from eight games, they’ve lost six league matches in a row, and their 18 goals conceded is the worst defensive record in the division. With nine scored, their goal difference is minus nine.

They’ve also changed coach again. Alexandre Santos was sacked less than six weeks after replacing Joao Giao, and Joao Henriques has been appointed, though caretaker Bruno Abreu is expected on the bench for this one.

Braga have 11 points from eight games, with three wins, two draws and three defeats. Their run before Thursday read 1-3 at home to Sporting, 0-3 at Copenhagen and 1-2 at home to Gil Vicente, which is why Vicens went.

The Gil Vicente defeat on 19 October was a postponed second-round fixture, so Braga have also played eight league games, the same number as Nacional.

The prices reflect the gap. Braga are 1.51, the draw is 3.90 and Nacional are 6.00, and I think the away win is the right call.

CD Nacional: six league defeats in a row and out of the cup to a third-tier side CD Nacional

The league run started with a 1-0 defeat at Vitoria and hasn’t stopped. Nacional lost 3-2 at home to Estrela, 2-0 at Sporting, 3-1 at home to Alverca, 4-0 at home to Famalicao and 3-2 at Rio Ave on 11 October.

They’ve conceded at least two goals in each of their last five league games. Last weekend they went out of the Taca de Portugal, beaten 1-0 by third-tier Sanjoanense.

The home record is one win and three defeats from four games, with five scored and ten conceded. Braga have won five of their last six league visits to Madeira.

There was one bright spot at Rio Ave. Abdel Kader Njoya scored twice on his debut, the only two league goals he has so far, and he’s expected to lead the line again, with Matchoi Djalo, the side’s main creative player, behind him.

The injury list doesn’t help. Leo Santos has a knee injury, Ulisses an ankle problem, Filipe Soares has missed the last five games with a muscle injury and Wesley Gasolina is a doubt.

Nacional did beat Braga 1-0 away in September 2025. Braga won the other four of the last five meetings, including 2-1 in Funchal in February.

Braga: Pau Victor’s four goals and a clean sheet against Gent Braga

Thursday’s win over Gent was Braga’s first in five games. Before it they’d drawn 0-0 at Santa Clara and then lost three times in a row in all competitions.

The league wins this season came against Estoril, 1-0 at home, and Alverca, 2-1 away. The goal record is modest: nine scored and ten conceded in eight league games.

Pau Victor is the top scorer with four league goals, and he’s expected to start behind Jovan Milosevic with captain Ricardo Horta. Victor Gomez, who scored inside three minutes on Thursday, is expected at right wing-back.

Sikou Niakate is the only long-term absentee, with an Achilles injury that dates back to April. Lagerbielke, V. Carvalho and Bajrami are the likely back three in front of Bernardo Fontes.

The away form is the doubt. Across their last ten games, Braga failed to score in 60% of their away matches, and they’ve won once on the road in the league this season, 2-1 at Alverca.

The European run has been uneven. Copenhagen beat them 3-0 on 15 October before the Gent win, and Thursday’s clean sheet was their first in four games across all competitions.

The head-to-head points the other way. Braga have won 18 of the 26 meetings with Nacional, against four Nacional wins.

Probable lineup CD Nacional: Marin; De la Cruz, Goncalves, Ze Victor, Kokolo; Labidi, Baeza; Gavriel, Djalo, Song; Njoya
Probable lineup Braga: Bernardo Fontes; Lagerbielke, V. Carvalho, Bajrami; V. Gomez, Tiknaz, Gorby, G. Martinez; Pau Victor, Horta; Milosevic

Our prediction: Braga to win @ 1.51

I’d back Braga at 1.51. Nacional have lost six straight league games and conceded at least twice in each of the last five, they’re on their third coach of the season, and they went out of the cup to a third-tier side a week ago.

Braga’s own form is the argument against. They’d lost three in a row before Thursday, and they’ve failed to score in 60% of their recent away games.

The win over Gent and the clean sheet that came with it are enough for me. Braga have won five of their last six league trips to Madeira, and Nacional’s defence has let in 18 in eight games. For a bigger price, over 2.5 goals is 1.90, and 73% of the 26 meetings between these sides have gone over that line.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
