Motherwell vs St Mirren: seven without a win for the hosts, seven straight games conceding for the visitors Scottish Premiership

Josh Campbell’s header in the 93rd minute at McDiarmid Park on Wednesday cost Motherwell their first league win since the opening weeks of the season. St Johnstone drew 2-2, and Alfred Johansson’s side are now without a victory in seven Scottish Premiership games, six of them defeats.

Johansson said afterwards that he was encouraged by the fire his players showed in the dressing room. He needs it to show at Fir Park on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 3pm UK time, against St Mirren.

Motherwell are tenth with nine points from 11 games. St Mirren are seventh with 14, five points better off, after a win and a draw in their last two league matches ended a five-game losing run.

St Mirren have conceded 19 league goals, the third-worst record in the division, and Motherwell have let in 20 over the same 11 games.

St Mirren have also conceded in each of their last seven league games. Motherwell, for their part, have failed to score in their last three at Fir Park, all of them defeats.

The bookmakers have Motherwell at 1.80, which is generous to a side without a league win in seven games. I’d rather back both teams to score at 1.57, with over 2.5 goals available at 1.62 for anyone who wants the bigger total.

Motherwell: three home blanks in a row, but two goals at McDiarmid Park Motherwell

The losing run at home reads 4-0 to Aberdeen, 2-0 to Celtic and 2-0 to Hearts. Away from Fir Park they lost 2-1 at Dundee and 3-2 at Kilmarnock before Wednesday’s draw in Perth.

The trip to St Johnstone was their best attacking display in weeks. Tawanda Maswanhise and Ibrahim Said were the standout performers, and both have two league goals this season.

Alex Lowry leads the scoring with three, Palmer-Houlden has two, and Motherwell’s expected goals sit at 1.7 a game, a figure that suggests the attack is underperforming rather than empty.

Callum Hendry and Paul McGinn are still out injured, and Dylan Williams and Oscar Priestman are doubts, the same absences that hit them in Perth on Wednesday.

Johansson is expected to keep Paulsen in goal behind Sparrow, Girdwood-Reich, Moormann and Longelo, with McGhee and Levitt in midfield and Maswanhise, Said and Hodge supporting Palmer-Houlden.

Fir Park has been a good venue against this opponent. Motherwell have won two of the last three Premiership meetings there, and six of 14 league meetings at home since 2018, with St Mirren winning four. Over the full league record since 2018, St Mirren have beaten Motherwell five times in 27 meetings.

Goals have come from all over the side, with Lukas Fadinger, Levitt and Charles-Cook among those on one. Motherwell average nine shots a game, yet the three home defeats against Aberdeen, Celtic and Hearts produced no goals at all.

St Mirren: three wins from four, then five defeats, and seven games in a row conceding St Mirren

Craig McLeish’s side won three and drew one of their first four league games. Then came five straight defeats, including 5-0 at Hearts, 3-0 at home to Dundee United and 3-1 at Aberdeen.

A 2-1 home win over Dundee was followed by a 1-1 draw with Hibernian in midweek, when St Mirren came from behind to take a point.

Killian Phillips is their top league scorer with three, and Eseosa Sule has two. Sule scored and set up the other goal in the win over Dundee.

St Mirren have lost their last three away league games, at Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen. A win at Fir Park would be only their third from six league trips this season.

Jonah Ayunga, Keanu Baccus and Nikolas Agrafiotis are out, and Malik Dijksteel is a doubt. McLeish could name the same side that drew with Hibs, with Chapman behind a back three of Fraser, Gogic and Fieldson.

Their expected goals against sits at 1.9 per game, the same as Motherwell’s. Both sides average close to one goal scored a game in the league.

Behind Phillips and Sule the scoring is spread thin: Ramsay, John, Nsio, Taylor and Agrafiotis have one league goal each, and St Mirren have kept three clean sheets all season, none of them in the last seven league games.

Probable lineup Motherwell: Paulsen; Sparrow, Girdwood-Reich, Moormann, Longelo; McGhee, Levitt; Maswanhise, Said, Hodge; Palmer-Houlden
Probable lineup St Mirren: Chapman; Fraser, Gogic, Fieldson; Ramsay, Carr, Phillips, John; Thomas, Sule, Mochrie

Our prediction: Both teams to score (odds 1.57)

Both teams to score at 1.57 is my pick. St Mirren haven’t kept a clean sheet in seven league games, and Motherwell scored twice in Perth on Wednesday with Maswanhise and Said both in form.

The three home blanks are what worries me about this bet. Motherwell’s expected goals of 1.7 a game say those blanks owe more to finishing than to a lack of chances, and St Mirren concede 1.9 expected goals a game.

St Mirren have scored in each of their last two games and have Phillips and Sule capable of a goal on the break. A 1-1 or 2-1 either way is where I see this one finishing, with Maswanhise for the hosts and Phillips for the visitors the likeliest names on the scoresheet.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
