Moldova vs Slovakia: a leaky home side against the group leaders with goals in their legs
Eighteen matches without a clean sheet. That is Moldova’s defensive record walking into Tuesday night, and it is the first thing Slovakia will have circled.
Moldova host Slovakia on Tuesday 6 October at the Zimbru Stadium in Chisinau, with kick-off at 20:45 Paris time. This is matchday four of League C Group 3 in the Nations League.
The table sets up a straight fight for top spot. Slovakia lead with seven points, Moldova sit second on four after their win in Kazakhstan on Friday.
A Slovakia win would put them six points clear of the chasing pack if Kazakhstan beat the Faroe Islands. With six points left after that, promotion would be close to sealed.
The reverse fixture only happened on 26 September. Slovakia won it 2-0, their third straight victory over Moldova.
The numbers around both teams point one way: goals. Five of Moldova’s last six games have seen both teams score, and Slovakia’s last eight outings have averaged more than three goals per match.
Add a Moldova side that concedes first almost every time and a Slovakia side that keeps opening the scoring, and the shape of this game writes itself.
Moldova: first win in 18 games, but the back door is still open
Lilian Popescu’s side finally broke a long drought on Friday. The 2-1 win in Kazakhstan ended a 17-game winless run stretching back to November 2024, with five draws and twelve defeats in that spell.
Petru Popescu and Nicky Clescenco scored that night, and both should start again. Moldova survived early scares before dominating the second half, which is a genuine sign of life.
The attacking intent is real. Petru Popescu has fired 15 shots in his last four caps, yet scored only once, so the volume is there even if the finishing lags behind.
The defending is the problem. Moldova have conceded first in nine of their last ten matches, and that 18-game run without a clean sheet is not a fluke.
Home has offered little comfort either. The last two games in Chisinau ended level, and the five before that were all defeats.
Over the last five matches, Moldova trail Slovakia in shots (54 to 66) and corners (17 to 32), and complete passes at around 83 per cent against roughly 90 for the visitors. Popescu’s men will create chances, but they will give up more.

Slovakia: seven straight games opening the scoring, shaky on the road
Vladimir Weiss’s side dropped their first points on Friday with a 1-1 draw in the Faroe Islands. They created worryingly little from open play that night, and the 100 per cent start was gone.
Zoom out and the picture is sharper. Slovakia are unbeaten in six (four wins, two draws), with 11 goals scored and five conceded across that run.
They also have a habit worth noting: Slovakia have opened the scoring in seven consecutive matches. Against a Moldova side that concedes first nine times in ten, that trend looks sticky.
The weakness is travel. Slovakia have lost six of their last eight away games and won only one of them, which is exactly why this one will not be a stroll.
Weiss has a clean bill of health. Milan Skriniar, Stanislav Lobotka, David Hancko and Ondrej Duda should all start, and Duda has two goals and an assist in his last four caps.
David Strelec came off the bench on Friday after starting the first two group games, and he is the likely option up front. Lukas Haraslin adds a real set-piece threat from wide.
Probable lineup Moldova: Celeadnic; Cucos, Iovu, Gherasimencov; Forov, Fratea, David, Perciun, Reabciuk; Clescenco, Popescu
Probable lineup Slovakia: Greif; Valjent, Skriniar, Vavro, Hancko; Suslov, Lobotka, Duda; Sauer, Strelec, Haraslin

Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals (odds 1.80)
Slovakia to win sits around 1.45 at best, too short for the risk of backing a side that loses six away games in eight. The goals market is where the value lives.
Moldova have not kept a clean sheet in 18 games and scored twice in Kazakhstan, while Slovakia average over three goals per match across their last eight. Both teams have scored in five of Moldova’s last six fixtures.
A 2-1 either way, or something wilder, fits every trend on the board. At 1.80, over 2.5 goals is the call.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
