Russia vs Nigeria: four straight wins against a squad missing half its spine International Friendly

Fourteen goals scored, one conceded. That is what Russia have produced across their last five matches, and it frames Tuesday’s friendly in Nizhny Novgorod better than any ranking ever could.

Russia host Nigeria on Tuesday 6 October at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, with kick-off at 18:00 Paris time. It is only the second senior meeting between the two nations.

The first one ended 1-1 at the Luzhniki in June 2025. Semi Ajayi turned a Viktor Melekhin cross into his own net after 27 minutes, and Tolu Arokodare came off the bench to level on 71.

Neither of those two goalscorers will be involved this time. Ajayi is among the absentees, and Arokodare was left out of the Super Eagles squad altogether.

On paper, Nigeria still sit higher in the FIFA rankings, 26th against Russia’s 35th. On the grass in October 2026, that gap means very little.

Russia arrive on a four-match winning run, scoring at least twice every time. Nigeria arrive bruised by a 3-0 beating in Guinea-Bissau and stripped of most of their first-choice eleven.

The friendly carries no competitive weight for the hosts, still banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022. For Eric Chelle, it carries plenty, because his job is under the microscope before November.

Russia: 14 goals in five games and a midfield pair that never changes Russia

Valeri Karpin has turned a calendar of friendlies into a winning habit. His record since taking permanent charge sits at a 66 per cent win rate across 38 matches.

The recent run is brutal in its consistency. Russia beat Burkina Faso 3-0 and Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 in June, then Iran 2-0 in Kazan on 29 September.

Saturday’s 6-0 demolition of Namibia in Yekaterinburg was the loudest of the lot. Six different players found the net, which tells you this attack does not lean on one man.

That matters, because Aleksandr Golovin is out with an ankle and tibia contusion. He scored twice in the first half against Iran, and Russia will miss his craft between the lines.

Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov has also gone back to PSG, while Turpal-Ali Ibishev, Dmitri Barinov and Nikita Krivtsov are all injured. Stanislav Agkatsev should keep the gloves.

The engine room stays intact. Artem Karpukas and Nail Umyarov have started together in each of Russia’s last five matches, and that pairing is the reason the back four rarely gets exposed.

Aleksey Miranchuk is the senior attacking figure. The Atlanta United winger has five goals and six assists in 19 MLS appearances this season, and Aleksandr Sobolev should lead the line again.

Nigeria: eight first-choice absentees and a coach under pressure Nigeria

Nigeria’s last trip ended in a 3-0 defeat away at Guinea-Bissau on 29 September. Four days earlier, they had needed to come from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo.

That loss leaves the Super Eagles on three points in AFCON qualifying Group L, behind Guinea-Bissau on goal difference. Only one team goes through, so the margin for error is already gone.

The squad Chelle brings to Russia looks nothing like his best eleven. Victor Osimhen is out with an adductor strain, and Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey are all unavailable.

The list keeps going. Wilfred Ndidi withdrew, Victory Akpe pulled out injured in training, and Bright Osayi-Samuel also left the squad, while Frank Onyeka, Semi Ajayi and Bruno Onyemaechi are missing too.

Fresh faces fill the gaps. Tromso’s Vince Osuji earns a first call-up, and 19-year-old Reims midfielder John Otomewo comes in alongside Rostov’s Ibraheem Mahfus Ajasa as late cover.

The one real spark is Kelechi Iheanacho. He has scored in each of his first eight TFF 1. Lig appearances for Bursaspor, with 11 goals and two assists since leaving Celtic as a free agent this summer.

Chelle took Nigeria to the AFCON semi-finals in Morocco and holds a 58 per cent win rate from 31 matches. Even so, a patched-up back line with no first-choice full-backs is a heavy handicap against a side this sharp.

Probable lineup Russia: Agkatsev; Adamov, Melekhin, Osipenko, Beveev; Karpukas, Umyarov; Miranchuk, Prutsev, Sadulaev; Sobolev
Probable lineup Nigeria: Nwabali; Fernandez, Osuji, Igboke; Otomewo, Nwoko; Simon, Akor Adams, Iheanacho (full back line not announced at time of publication)

Free Football Prediction: Russia vs Nigeria

Our prediction: Russia to win (odds 1.83)

Russia have scored at least twice in four straight matches and conceded once in five. Nigeria have just shipped three in Bissau and now travel without eight regulars, including their captain and their best striker.

Iheanacho can hurt anyone on current form, and a Nigeria goal would not shock us. Russia’s continuity is the deciding edge, with the same midfield pair, the same shape and a home crowd in Nizhny Novgorod.

At 1.83, backing the hosts is the clean call. Karpin’s side have more rhythm, more cohesion and more reasons to keep their winning streak alive than a Super Eagles group still learning each other’s names.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
