Kosovo vs Ireland: two World Cup bids ended at the last hurdle, with seven goals across two playoffs for the hosts 
Kosovo dumped out Slovakia 4-3 in Bratislava in the World Cup playoff semi-final on 26 March. Five days later, they lost 1-0 at home to Turkey and watched their first World Cup dream slip away.
The Republic of Ireland suffered a similar fate, only in even shorter order. A 2-2 draw with Czech Republic in the playoff semi-final, then a 4-3 defeat on penalties.
Those two near-misses set the tone for Thursday night’s clash. Kick-off is at 20:45 Paris time at Prishtina City Stadium.
It is Matchday 1 in Group 3 of League B in the Nations League. Austria and Israel, the other two sides in the section, meet on the same evening in Linz.
On paper, the two teams come into the group from very different positions. Kosovo have come up from League C and were ranked 32nd and last among League B sides at the February draw.
Ireland, by contrast, were 27th in that same ranking, in Pot 3. The gap looked real enough on paper, but the spring results told a different story.
With the stakes in the group, every point matters from the opening night. Top spot means promotion to League A, bottom place means dropping to League C, and the two sides in between are pushed into playoffs in March 2027.
The schedule piles on an immediate burden for both teams. Kosovo go to Vienna on 27 September, while Ireland face Israel at a neutral venue on the same date.
That quick turnaround over three days will shape the rotation choices. It also explains why this opener in Pristina is worth more than three points in the wider group picture.

Kosovo finished second in their World Cup qualifying group behind Switzerland. That sent them into playoff path C, with a trip to Slovakia to start.
On 26 March 2026 in Bratislava, they produced their best performance of the campaign. Four away goals against a higher-ranked side, scored by Veldin Hodza, Fisnik Asllani, Florent Muslija and Kreshnik Hajrizi.
The flip side came in the same result. Three goals conceded in that one match, to Martin Valjent, Lukas Haraslin and David Strelec, showed the defensive fragility in the Kosovo side.
The playoff final backed that up, only in the worst possible way. In front of their own fans at Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri, Kosovo failed to score and lost 1-0 to Turkey on 31 March.
Two knockout games, two very different stories: seven goals in one, none in the other. That swing is still the clearest clue for Thursday night.
The venue gives Kosovo one clear edge. They are back in the same stadium where that final defeat unfolded, this time against an opponent with less firepower than Turkey.
Promotion from League C also points to a side that has earned its way up on the pitch. Kosovo are not here because of some ranking quirk; they won their group in the continent’s third tier.

The group set-up is unusual for Ireland. Their two fixtures against Israel will be played on neutral ground, with the home game moved to Serbia.
That move cuts down the number of nights in Dublin. Ireland will play only four of their six group matches in normal home conditions, which makes this trip carry more weight than its place in the calendar might suggest.
Kosovo and Ireland have never met in the Nations League, because the two teams have never shared the same tier before now. So this first meeting comes with no direct reference point for either side.
Ireland’s most obvious strength is their ability to nick goals in a one-off game. Two against Czech Republic, against a defence that later held firm all the way to qualification, means more than any talk about current form.

The first reason is Kosovo’s defence. They shipped three goals in the only playoff they won, in Bratislava, even though they controlled the scoreboard for long spells.
The second is the home attack and what it did in the biggest moments. Four away goals against Slovakia, from four different scorers, is not the profile of a side likely to sit back and wait for 0-0 on home soil.
Ireland, meanwhile, found the net twice against Czech Republic in a knockout match. The call is simple and it stands up: both teams to score in Pristina.
