Serbia vs Greece: ninth against fifteenth in the top rankings, a stand-alone clash in Group 2 
Serbia were drawn in Pot 3, Greece in Pot 4. Ninth against fifteenth in UEFA’s overall rankings, the gap in status is real but hardly a chasm.
That figure matters even more because the other two teams in the group are Germany and the Netherlands. The key points to avoid relegation will mostly come from the head-to-heads between Serbia and Greece.
Kick-off is set for Thursday 24 September at 20:45 Paris time, at Stadion Rajko Mitić in Belgrade. It is Serbia’s first of two home games in four days, before the Netherlands come to town on 27.
Serbia then face two trips, to Munich on 1 October and Eindhoven on 4. The schedule is packed, so points have to be taken now.
Greece arrive with the status of newcomers. They earned their place in League A by finishing top of their League B group, ahead of England, Norway, Wales, Turkiye and Czechia.
The two squads also share a recently changed dugout. Veljko Paunovic took charge of Serbia in early November 2025, after Dragan Stojkovic was sacked following a defeat in Leskovac.
Ivan Jovanovic is still in charge of Greece, with Anastasios Bakasetas as captain. His side sit 46th in the FIFA rankings published on 20 July 2026.
The preparation contrast is worth noting. Greece have not played a single match since their meeting with Italy on 7 June.
A home side that needs to get its campaign moving and has a key figure back, against an opponent that has not played for three months: that is where the imbalance lies, more than in the rankings.
Serbia: Tadic returns and two absences hit the core 
Paunovic named a 28-man squad on 18 September for the first four matches of this campaign. It is his first Nations League call-up since taking over.
The headline return is Dusan Tadic. The former captain is back in the national team, giving this side the technical focal point it has been missing.
Two absences, though, weaken the spine. Goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic and defender Nikola Milenkovic have pulled out of the camp through injury.
Losing your first-choice keeper and one of your leading centre-backs in the same window forces Paunovic to reshuffle at the back. That is Serbia’s biggest concern for this opener.
The coach has also opened the door to three new faces. Petar Sukacev and Lazar Nikolic, both from Vojvodina, join Almeria defender Stefan Djodic on the list.
It is a clear mix: keep the experienced heads, but widen the pool before a campaign that looks nasty. With Germany and the Netherlands on the schedule, squad depth will matter.
The real edge remains Rajko Mitic. Playing twice in Belgrade in four days gives Serbia an ideal chance to build survival, and the match against Greece is by far the most winnable of the four.

Greece: back in the top tier and three months without a game 
Greece are back in League A after promotion in the previous edition. The step up is immediate, with Germany and the Netherlands in the same group.
Jovanovic has picked 30 players for this window. The size of the squad suggests a broad test before the toughest fixtures.
Goalkeeper is a surprisingly busy area. Odysseas Vlachodimos, Konstantinos Tzolakis, Christos Mandas and Antonis Tsiftsis are all called up, at Sevilla, Olympiakos, Bournemouth and PAOK respectively.
The back line is the real strength of this side. Konstantinos Mavropanos plays for West Ham, Konstantinos Koulierakis for Wolfsburg, Konstantinos Tsimikas for Roma and Pantelis Hatzidiakos for FC Copenhagen.
Georgios Vagiannidis of Sporting CP, Panagiotis Retsos of Olympiakos and Lazaros Rota of AEK Athens add further depth. On paper, Greece have the tools to sit deep and stay solid in Belgrade.
The problem is elsewhere. This side have not played since 7 June and their match with Italy, meaning more than three months without an international fixture.
The schedule does them no favours either. After Belgrade, Greece travel to Augsburg to face Germany on 27 September, which makes this opener even more important to avoid losing.

Our prediction: Serbia to win
The first argument is sharpness. Greece arrive in Belgrade after more than three months without an official match, while Serbia have a 28-man squad built specifically for this double home stand.
Dusan Tadic’s return for Serbia also changes the picture in the final third. A team that lacked a creator now has a player who can unlock a packed defence, which is exactly the sort of game this looks like.
The points situation also pushes Serbia to go at it. With Germany and the Netherlands to play four times across six rounds, Paunovic knows the margin for error has to be built here and now, in front of home fans.
So the call is clear. Serbia to win at Stadion Rajko Mitić.
