Freiburg vs Schalke 04: a perfect home record against a promoted side that’s stopped scoring Bundesliga

Twenty-four goals in seven competitive games. Freiburg have scored three or more five times already this season, and they’ve won six of those seven outings. Schalke 04 walk into the Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday, kick-off 17:30 Paris time, against the form attack of the Bundesliga’s early weeks.

The table backs it up. Freiburg are third with 10 points from four league games and they’re still unbeaten. Schalke, back in the top flight after winning the second tier, sit 11th on five points.

Then there’s the history. Schalke haven’t beaten Freiburg in eight meetings, and they’ve lost six of those. That’s not a blip. That’s a pattern stretching back years.

Freiburg’s home form makes for uncomfortable reading if you’re travelling from Gelsenkirchen. Three games in Breisgau this season, three wins: Motherwell, Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach all went home empty-handed, the last two beaten 4-1 and 5-0.

Schalke’s problem is at the other end. Two goalless draws in their last three Bundesliga matches, against Bayern Munich and fellow newcomers Elversberg. Credit where it’s due on the Bayern point. But a draw with Elversberg at home? That one should have been three.

So what does Miron Muslic do against a side that’s been putting four and five past people at home? Hope, mostly.

Freiburg: unbeaten, perfect at home, and goals coming from everywhere Freiburg

A 4-1 win over Werder Bremen. A 1-0 victory at Paderborn. A 5-0 thrashing of Gladbach. Then a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 September, the only blemish on the league record so far.

That Frankfurt game was also the first time all season Julian Schuster’s side had conceded twice in a match. They’d kept two clean sheets in a row going into it. The defence isn’t airtight, but it’s far from a problem.

The attack is the story. Yuito Suzuki has four league goals. Igor Matanovic has three. Yannik Engelhardt and Maximilian Eggestein have chipped in with two each from midfield, and Matthias Ginter already has three assists from centre-back. Derry Scherhant has a goal and two assists. That’s spread. That’s hard to defend.

Engelhardt and Scherhant were both called up by Germany during the break, so there’s a fatigue question. It’s a small one. Freiburg’s squad is in good health, with attacker Florent Muslija the only confirmed long-term absentee, out until December with the knee injury he suffered in April.

This is a side that reached the Europa League final last season. It knows what it’s about. And at home, it’s been ruthless.

Expect Jan-Niklas Beste, Suzuki and Scherhant behind Matanovic again. Simple as that.

Schalke 04: unbeaten in three, but 180 minutes without a goal in the last four Schalke 04

Look at the sequence: lost 3-0 at Augsburg, drew 0-0 with Bayern Munich, won 3-1 at Union Berlin, drew 0-0 with Elversberg. Five points, a two-point lead over 16th-placed Hamburger SV, and a scoring record that swings from nothing to plenty.

The away form is actually Schalke’s best argument. They’ve won two of three road trips in all competitions, scoring eight and conceding six. The win in Berlin showed they can hurt a team that leaves space.

But the absences pile up in the wrong areas. Dejan Ljubicic, who brought four goals and three assists after arriving from Dinamo Zagreb last season, is out. Striker Emil Hojlund is also unavailable. That leaves Moussa Sylla to lead the line, supported by Kenan Karaman and Adil Aouchiche.

Karaman is the man to watch. Fourteen goals and five assists in the second tier last season. He’s the closest thing Schalke have to a reliable source of goals, and he’ll need to be sharp against a side that’s averaging three a game at home.

At the back, Muslic is expected to keep the back three of Timo Becker, Nikola Katic and Hasan Kurucay in front of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius, with Robin Gosens on the left side.

The bigger issue? Eight meetings with Freiburg, no wins. History doesn’t play, but it doesn’t lie either.

Probable lineup Freiburg: Backhaus; Treu, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo; Eggestein, Engelhardt; Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant; Matanovic
Probable lineup Schalke 04: Karius; Becker, Katic, Kurucay; Ebimbe, El-Faouzi, Tanaka, Gosens; Karaman, Aouchiche; Sylla

Free Bundesliga Prediction: Freiburg vs Schalke 04

Our prediction: Freiburg to win (odds 1.60)

Freiburg have won every home game they’ve played this season and scored four or more in two of them. Schalke have failed to score in two of their last three league matches and are without two important attacking pieces in Ljubicic and Hojlund.

The head-to-head adds weight: no Schalke win in eight attempts against this opponent, with six defeats. Promoted sides travelling to an in-form top-three team with that kind of record don’t often turn the script.

At 1.60, the home win is the play. Freiburg’s spread of scorers means Schalke can’t simply shut down one man, and a side this sharp at home should have too much for a visitor that’s struggled to create.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
