Philadelphia Flyers vs Carolina Hurricanes: 1.2 goals a game against the hottest attack in the East
1.2 goals per game. That’s what the Philadelphia Flyers have produced so far this season, on just 21.2 shots a night. They host the Carolina Hurricanes at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday, puck drop 7 PM ET, which is 01:00 Paris time on Monday.
Philadelphia are 0-3-2. No wins from five, and the opening night set the tone: a 7-0 home defeat to Pittsburgh, followed by a 3-2 overtime loss to New Jersey. They’ve conceded 3.8 goals per game and 11 across their last three outings.
Carolina arrive at 4-1-1, the defending Stanley Cup champions, on a three-game winning streak. Sixteen goals in those three games. The numbers point one way.
History adds weight. These two met in the second round of last season’s playoffs, and Carolina swept Philadelphia on the way to the Cup. Game 1 of that series finished 3-0, Frederik Andersen with the shutout and Logan Stankoven with two goals.
The market agrees. Carolina are 1.60 favourites on the road, with the Flyers at 2.40 and the total set at 5.5 goals.
Is there anything in the Flyers’ numbers that suggests a turnaround? Not much. Their best hope is that a home crowd and a desperate dressing room produce something the stats can’t see.
Philadelphia Flyers: the attack has stalled and the injury list keeps growing
The opening night 7-0 loss to the Penguins still hangs over this team. A year ago Philadelphia knocked Pittsburgh out of the first round. This season, they couldn’t get a shot past them at home.
Scoring is the problem. 1.2 goals per game is about as low as it gets, and 21.2 shots per game tells you they aren’t generating volume either. Matvei Michkov leads the team with two goals. Sean Couturier has two points. That’s thin.
Travis Konecny had three assists, but he’s out until around 1 November. Losing their main playmaker when goals are already this hard to come by is a blow they can ill afford.
The list doesn’t stop there. Nikita Grebenkin is on injured reserve until February. Rasmus Ristolainen and Cam York are both listed with issues through this game. That leaves the blue line short of experience against a Carolina forward group that’s rolling.
Dan Vladar’s last start was rough: five goals allowed on 32 shots, an .844 save percentage. Porter Martone scored the lone goal in that defeat. One goal, once again.
The Flyers need a win. Desperation can carry a team for a period. Over 60 minutes against this opponent, it rarely does.

Carolina Hurricanes: 16 goals in three games and Aho leading the charge
Sebastian Aho has eight points this season, four of them goals. He’s the reason Carolina’s attack is averaging 3.60 goals on 31 shots per game, and he’s had plenty of help.
Jackson Blake is third on the team with five points, all assists. Four other Hurricanes have four points each. That depth is what makes this side so hard to defend: there’s no single line to shut down.
The last outing was a statement. Logan Stankoven scored three times on five shots in just over 15 minutes, Andrei Svechnikov added two, and Carolina won by five goals. Pyotr Kochetkov allowed only two on 20 shots.
Defensively, the numbers hold up too. Carolina allow 2.80 goals on just 21 shots per game. Opponents don’t get many looks, and when they do, the goaltending has been sound.
There are absences. Alexander Nikishin is out until around 1 November and Seth Jarvis is on injured reserve until roughly 24 October. Jarvis is a significant loss on paper. On the evidence of the last three games, Carolina haven’t missed him much.
This is a team that knows what it’s about. Champions, unbeaten in three, and facing an opponent they swept five months ago.

Our prediction: Carolina Hurricanes to win (1.60)
Break down the numbers and a clear edge emerges for Carolina. 3.60 goals scored per game against 1.2. 2.80 conceded against 3.8. A team on a three-game winning streak against one still waiting for its first win.
The injuries tilt it further. Philadelphia lose Konecny, their assist leader, plus Grebenkin, Ristolainen and York. Carolina are without Jarvis and Nikishin, but their scoring depth has covered the gap comfortably so far.
At 1.60, the Hurricanes moneyline is the cleanest way to back that gap. We’d also note the over 5.5 goals at 1.80 as a secondary angle, but Philadelphia’s inability to score makes the straight win the stronger play.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
