Fenerbahce vs Liverpool: an interim coach against the side that never draws Champions League

Ismail Kartal resigned on 27 October, a day after Fenerbahce lost the Istanbul derby 2-1 at Galatasaray. His assistant Dirk Kuyt now takes the side into a Champions League night against the club he played for between 2006 and 2012, when he scored 71 goals in 285 appearances.

Kick-off at the Sukru Saracoglu is Wednesday 4 November at 17:45 UK time, one of the two early games on Matchday 4. The clubs have never met in a competitive match.

The league-phase table shows how far apart they are. Fenerbahce sit 31st of 36 with two points from three games and a goal difference of minus six, while Liverpool are third on nine points after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1, LASK 6-3 and Villarreal 4-3.

Those Liverpool scorelines cut both ways. Andoni Iraola’s side have scored 12 times in the competition and conceded seven, and they haven’t kept a clean sheet in Europe this season.

Two long-running records sit behind Wednesday’s game. Fenerbahce haven’t won any of their last ten Champions League matches, four draws and six defeats, the longest such run in the club’s history. Liverpool haven’t drawn in their last 46 UEFA matches, a sequence that goes back to a 3-3 with Benfica in the 2021/22 quarter-final.

One number runs against the visitors. Liverpool have lost their last three UEFA away games in Turkey, each of them 1-0, and their overall record away to Turkish clubs reads one win, one draw and six defeats.

Fenerbahce: the league’s top scorers, but nine conceded in three European games Fenerbahce

At home in the Super Lig, Fenerbahce score freely. They have 23 goals from nine matches, more than any other side in the division, and sit fifth on 16 points, six behind Galatasaray.

Europe has gone very differently. A 1-1 at home to Roma opened the campaign, then came a 6-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 14 October. Six days later they led Slavia Prague 2-0 in Istanbul through Oguz Aydin and Mason Greenwood, and still drew 2-2.

The squad Kuyt inherits is short of defenders. Archie Brown is suspended after a red card, Nathan Ake and Jayden Oosterwolde are injured, and Marco Asensio is also sidelined. Amara Diouf is unavailable too.

Romelu Lukaku leads the line, with Vedat Muriqi as the alternative, and Lukaku scored in the 3-0 win over Alanyaspor on 17 October. Irfan Can Kahveci got Fenerbahce’s goal in the derby defeat, and N’Golo Kante and Matteo Guendouzi form the midfield pair in front of the back four.

The club’s home record against English sides in UEFA competition stands at four wins, two draws and six defeats. Kuyt’s first game in charge was at home to Goztepe on Saturday, and that selection is the best guide to how he’ll line up on Wednesday.

Liverpool: 12 Champions League goals and no clean sheet Liverpool

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League on 15 points from eight games, and they host Arsenal on Sunday before flying to Istanbul.

The recent run is mostly wins. They won 2-1 at Brentford on 17 October, came from 2-0 down to beat Villarreal 4-3 three days later, beat Brighton 2-0 on 25 October and knocked Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Goals have come from all over the side. Alexis Mac Allister and Bradley Barcola have three each in this season’s Champions League, Ronald Araujo has two, and Kostas Tsimikas has supplied three assists. Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo have all scored in recent weeks.

Most of the absentees are defenders. Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are out, and Hugo Ekitike won’t return from an Achilles rupture until December. Dominik Szoboszlai hurt his hamstring at Brentford but is expected to be available for this trip, and Wirtz is fit again after an ankle knock.

Without Ekitike, Iraola has leaned on Isak through the middle with Gakpo, Wirtz and Barcola behind him. The 6-3 win at LASK is the only away game Liverpool have played in the competition this season, and they scored six times in it.

Probable lineup Fenerbahce: Ederson; Semedo, Skriniar, Peprah, Mercan; Kante, Guendouzi; Aydin, Kahveci, Greenwood; Lukaku
Probable lineup Liverpool: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Gakpo, Wirtz, Barcola; Isak

Free Champions League Prediction: Fenerbahce vs Liverpool

Our prediction: Liverpool to win (odds around 1.69)

We’d back Liverpool. Fenerbahce have conceded nine goals in three European games, are without three senior defenders and changed coach this week, while Liverpool have scored at least twice in every Champions League match this season.

The run of 1-0 defeats in Turkey is the case against, and Liverpool’s defending gives Fenerbahce a route to goal: Iraola’s side have conceded in all three league-phase games. With no Liverpool draw in 46 UEFA matches, though, the home side would have to win outright, and a team without a Champions League win in ten attempts hasn’t shown us enough to do that.

Liverpool to win is priced around 1.69. Both teams to score, at around 1.53, is the alternative for anyone who expects Lukaku and Greenwood to find a way through.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
