Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen: a perfect start meets a side that always finds the net Bundesliga

Four games, four wins, two goals conceded. Borussia Dortmund come out of the international break sitting top of the Bundesliga with the only perfect record in the division, and they open Matchday 5 at Signal Iduna Park on Friday 9 October, kick-off 20:30 Paris time.

Werder Bremen are the visitors. Eighth in the table, seven points from four games, eight goals scored and eight conceded. On paper it’s a mismatch. The numbers underneath it are more interesting than that.

Start with the obvious part. Dortmund have won six straight in all competitions since losing the Super Cup to Bayern, and three of their four league games have ended with a clean sheet. Niko Kovac has built a back three that doesn’t give much away, and the return of Nico Schlotterbeck has only tightened it.

Now the less obvious part. Bremen have scored in every one of their league games this season. Every one. Both teams found the net in four of their last five matches across all competitions. Nobody has kept them quiet yet.

So the question here isn’t really who wins. The market has already answered that, with Dortmund priced at 1.41 and Bremen out at 7.70. The real question is whether this Bremen attack, rebuilt around Niclas Fuellkrug, can put a dent in the best defence in Germany. That’s where the value sits.

History leans one way. Bremen haven’t beaten Dortmund in the last five league meetings: three Dortmund wins, two draws. The last trip to this ground ended 3-0 in January 2026, with Schlotterbeck, Marcel Sabitzer and Serhou Guirassy all scoring.

Borussia Dortmund: six straight wins and a back three that rarely bends Borussia Dortmund

The 1-0 win at Stuttgart before the break tells you a lot about this Dortmund side. Maximilian Beier scored the only goal, the hosts managed an expected goals figure under one, and Kovac’s team saw the game out without much fuss.

That’s the pattern. Hamburg were beaten 2-0, Paderborn 3-0, Stuttgart 1-0. The only league game where Dortmund conceded was the 3-2 win at Hoffenheim. Nine scored, two against. Clinical stuff.

The 3-4-2-1 has settled. Gregor Kobel behind Joane Gadou, Waldemar Anton and Schlotterbeck, with Joey Veerman and Felix Nmecha running the middle. Ethan Nwaneri and Beier sit behind Guirassy, who has two league goals and remains the focal point even with Premier League interest swirling around him.

There are some holes, though. Emre Can and Giannis Konstantelias are long-term absentees with ACL injuries, Justin Lerma and Filippo Mane missed Stuttgart with muscle problems, and Julian Ryerson is doubtful with a rib injury. If Ryerson can’t go, the right side loses its most reliable outlet. That’s a genuine concern on a night when Bremen want to attack the flanks.

Home form is the bigger story. Dortmund have been very hard to beat at Signal Iduna Park over the past 30 matches, and they won both home league games this season without conceding. Defending at this level isn’t luck. It’s structure.

One caveat. The Champions League win over Villarreal finished 3-2, which shows that when the tempo rises, this defence can still leak. Bremen will try to drag the game into exactly that kind of shape.

Werder Bremen: eight goals in four games and a Fuellkrug-shaped threat Werder Bremen

Fuellkrug has three Bundesliga goals since returning to Bremen this summer. He also scored on his competitive debut back with the club, in the 3-0 cup win at Hansa Lueneburg in August. A target man with that kind of touch changes how a side attacks, and Bremen look nothing like the blunt team of last season.

Daniel Thioune’s side opened with a 4-1 hammering at Freiburg. Not pretty. Since then, they’ve beaten RB Leipzig 3-1, drawn 1-1 at Koeln with Karl Hein saving a penalty, and then produced the comeback of the weekend before the break: 2-0 down to Augsburg, 3-2 up at full time thanks to Marco Gruell, Fuellkrug and a 93rd-minute screamer from Mitchell Weiser.

That’s character. It’s also a warning sign. A side that falls 2-0 behind at home to Augsburg has defensive issues, and Bremen have yet to keep a clean sheet in the league. Eight conceded in four games doesn’t bear close inspection.

The 3-4-3 relies on width and quick service. Eren Dinkci and Chuki play either side of Fuellkrug, with Gruell pushing on from midfield. The supply line is real. When Bremen get the ball wide, they create.

Injuries complicate things. Keke Topp, Jens Stage, Justin Njinmah and Moussa Ndiaye have all been working back from problems, and Felix Agu is still building fitness. Weiser is more likely to come off the bench after his long layoff.

Can they hold out for 90 minutes at the toughest ground in the league? Probably not. Can they score? Every piece of evidence says yes.

Probable lineup Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Gadou, Anton, Schlotterbeck; Ryerson (doubtful), Veerman, Nmecha, Svensson; Nwaneri, Beier; Guirassy
Probable lineup Werder Bremen: Hein; Pieper, Friedl, Deman; Arthur, Regeer, Reis, Gruell; Dinkci, Fuellkrug, Chuki

Our prediction: Both teams to score (1.58)

Dortmund are the better side and should win this. At 1.41, though, the home win offers nothing, so we’re looking at the goals market instead. Bremen have scored in all four league games, both teams scored in four of their last five matches overall, and Fuellkrug gives them a presence in the box that Dortmund’s back three hasn’t had to deal with yet this season.

Dortmund will create plenty against a defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet. The question is the other end, and the case builds there too: Ryerson’s doubtful, the rotation in midfield is thinner than it looks, and the Villarreal game showed this defence can concede twice when the game opens up.

A Dortmund win with Bremen getting on the scoresheet is the most likely outcome. Both teams to score at 1.58 is the play.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
