Lens vs Lyon: last season’s runners-up against the meanest defence in France Ligue 1

Two goals conceded in five games. That’s Olympique Lyonnais, unbeaten and second in Ligue 1, two points behind leaders Monaco. Their opponents on Friday have shipped nine in the same number of matches.

RC Lens finished second last season. Today they’re 15th, on four points, with one league win and a goal difference that’s the only thing keeping them out of the play-off spot. The contrast is stark, and it frames the opener of Matchday 6 at Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Friday 9 October, kick-off 20:45 Paris time.

The data paints a specific picture here. Lens haven’t won any of their last four Ligue 1 games: one draw, three defeats. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in any competitive match this season. Lyon haven’t conceded a domestic goal since early September, when they beat Auxerre 3-1.

And yet the market is split almost down the middle. Lens are around 2.40 at best, Lyon around 2.65. Why so close? Partly history. Lyon have beaten Lens just once in their last seven meetings, a 1-0 away win at the start of last season. Partly Bollaert itself, where Lens have won 28 of 58 home league meetings with Lyon since 1946.

There’s also a new man in the dugout. Yannick Cahuzac took over in mid-September after Dino Toppmoller was dismissed three months into the job, and the three-week international break has handed him something close to a mini pre-season.

Is that enough to close the gap? The numbers say no.

Lens: no clean sheet all season and a third coach since May Lens

Nine goals conceded in five rounds makes for uncomfortable reading at a club that built last season’s runners-up finish on organisation. Pierre Sage left for Crystal Palace. Toppmoller lasted three months. Cahuzac’s first game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Monaco, after a 2-2 draw at Le Mans the week before.

The last Lens win in any competition came a month ago, a 3-2 victory at Slavia Prague in the Champions League. That takes some explaining for a side with this squad.

The break did bring a little relief. Lens won 2-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Standard Liege on 2 October, with Florian Thauvin and Odsonne Edouard on the scoresheet. Thauvin has three goals and two assists in Ligue 1 and remains the main creative outlet. Edouard hadn’t scored this season before that friendly.

The squad picture is mixed. Abdulhamid and Titraoui are back. Robin Risser has recovered and keeps his place in goal. But Baidoo and Nawrocki are out at centre-back, with Nawrocki not expected back until the second half of the season, Chavez is set to miss out at left-back, and Amadou Haidara picked up an injury during the international break.

That leaves a back line still being stitched together in front of one of the league’s sharpest counter-attacking sides. Not ideal.

There’s one more factor. Lens host Sporting in the Champions League on Tuesday. Cahuzac can ill afford to rotate here, but the schedule won’t get easier from here either.

Lyon: unbeaten, two goals conceded and Nuamah in full flow Lyon

Paulo Fonseca gave his players a full week off during the international break. That tells you everything you need to know about how comfortable Lyon feel right now.

Three wins and two draws so far. A 4-0 demolition of Rennes before the break, with Ernest Nuamah scoring twice in the first half hour. A Europa League win at Anderlecht. Lyon missed out on Champions League qualification in the summer, but domestically they’ve been the most solid side in the country outside Monaco.

The defence is the headline. Two goals conceded in five games is the best record in Ligue 1, and the 0-0 at Paris FC showed they can grind as well as dominate. Summer arrivals have bedded in fast: Bacher at centre-back, Zachary Athekame at right-back with a hand in four goals, Bidstrup screening in front of the defence.

Up front, Nuamah leads the scoring with four Ligue 1 goals. Lois Openda, on loan from Juventus since this summer and a former Lens player, has one and knows Bollaert well. A defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet all season facing those two? The case builds.

Absences are limited. Nicolas Tagliafico returned from Argentina duty without playing and is expected to miss out, and Moussa Niakhate is a doubt after picking up a knock with Senegal. Abner should slot in at left-back.

Lyon also travel to Crystal Palace in the Europa League next Thursday. Fonseca has the depth to manage that.

Probable lineup Lens: Risser; Aguilar, Antonio, Todibo, Udol; Cuisance, Bulatovic; Mesloub, Thauvin, Kadile; Sima
Probable lineup Lyon: Greif; Athekame, Bacher, Kluivert, Abner; Bidstrup; Morton, Tolisso; Sulc; Nuamah, Openda

Our prediction: Lyon to win (2.63)

The market leans on history and on Bollaert. We lean on the current numbers: Lyon have the best defence in Ligue 1, Lens haven’t kept a single clean sheet in any competition, and the home side are on a four-game winless run with a coach who’s been in the job for three weeks.

Cahuzac’s arrival and the long break give Lens a little more organisation than they had in September, and Thauvin can produce a moment on his own. But one friendly win in Belgium doesn’t fix a back line missing Baidoo, Nawrocki and Chavez, and Lyon’s front line of Nuamah and Openda is exactly the profile that punishes a disorganised defence on the break.

At 2.63, the away win is the value in this match.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
