NBA Europe: EuroLeague shareholders turn down the NBA’s offer

A unanimous refusal in Cernobbio

The EuroLeague’s 13 shareholder clubs have said no to the NBA. Meeting on Tuesday in Cernobbio, Italy, they unanimously rejected the collaboration offer put to them by the North American league, according to a source close to the negotiations.

That source describes a proposal judged “unacceptable as it stands”. The source adds, however, that the door is not definitively closed, leaving room for further talks.

A European league planned for autumn 2027

For its part, the NBA is preparing to launch a rival competition on the continent in partnership with FIBA, the international federation. The project targets autumn 2027 with 16 teams, 12 of them permanent franchises based in major cities: Paris, Lyon, London, Manchester, Berlin, Munich, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Istanbul, Milan and Rome.

The NBA has repeated for several months that this league will go ahead whatever the outcome of its talks with the EuroLeague. The refusal therefore does not change its timetable, but it weighs on what comes next: without a deal, two major competitions will now vie for European basketball.
