Burnley vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: Turf Moor momentum against a Wolves side that’s stopped scoring Championship

A month ago, Nicky Hayen looked like a manager on borrowed time. Burnley had reached the international break without a league win, and plenty of supporters felt the board had been generous in keeping him. Three games later, the picture’s changed.

Five points from those three matches. A 1-1 draw with Derby, a 4-0 demolition of Watford at Vicarage Road, and then a 2-2 with Charlton that should have been a win until the visitors equalised in the 96th minute. That last one stung. Still, Burnley are now unbeaten in three and head into Friday’s game at Turf Moor (21:00 Paris time) with real momentum.

Wolves are going the other way. Cesar Peixoto had the fans on side after beating West Brom before the break. Then Middlesbrough beat them 1-0 and Bolton, last season’s League One playoff winners, won 3-1 at Molineux on Tuesday. Two defeats in a row and the mood has soured quickly.

There’s an old pattern in this fixture as well. Wolves have failed to win on any of their last eight visits to Turf Moor, though the two most recent meetings there both finished 1-1.

One more factor: this is the third game in less than a week for both squads. Rotation is coming. The question is which manager gets those calls right, and which side has the legs for a Friday night slog.

Burnley: unbeaten in three, but four draws from five at home Burnley

Burnley’s home record is the strangest part of their season. Four of their five league games at Turf Moor have ended level. The only defeat came against Bristol City, 2-1. They’re hard to beat here, but they haven’t learned how to put teams away.

The defending is the other problem. Nineteen goals conceded in ten games is a lot for a side with promotion ambitions, and the late leveller against Charlton showed exactly how fragile they can be when a lead needs protecting.

Still, the attack has woken up. Four at Watford and two against Charlton gives Hayen something to build on. A win on Friday would take them to within three points of the top ten. That’s the prize.

Team news shifts the back line. Anel Ahmedhodzic picked up a late injury against Charlton, so Hjalmar Ekdal is on standby. With Wolves short of height in attack, Kyle Walker could also be used in the middle of defence. Further forward, Marcus Edwards and Armando Broja are pushing to come in, with Jamie Vardy and Largie Ramazani likely to drop to the bench.

Chelsea loanee Dastan Satpaev is another option. His parent club stopped him from playing on Tuesday because he’s only just back from a hamstring injury. He may return to the squad here. Not a bad card to have up your sleeve.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: three goals in five outings and Raul Jimenez still missing Wolverhampton Wanderers

Three goals in five games. That’s where Wolves are in attack, and it doesn’t make for comfortable reading when you’re chasing promotion.

Before the last two defeats, Peixoto’s side went through a run of four games where every result was either a 1-0 win or a 1-0 loss. Tight, controlled, a bit joyless. Against Bolton, the control vanished. Adam Armstrong somehow missed from close range with the score at 1-1, and Bolton punished them twice. The visitors deserved it.

Across all competitions, Wolves have won just two of their last seven. The wins over Sheffield United and West Brom were both 1-0. The margins are thin, and right now they’re falling the wrong way.

Injuries make it harder. Raul Jimenez is out with a knee problem, and Yerson Mosquera and Rodrigo Gomes are also expected to stay sidelined. Without Jimenez the supply line up front has dried up, and Peixoto has to pick between Armstrong, Newcastle loanee Sean Neave, who could be handed a first Championship start, and Marshall Munetsi as a makeshift number nine.

Expect changes elsewhere too. Tommy Doyle and Munetsi could come into midfield with Andre rested, while Toti Gomes may replace Ladislav Krejci at the back. Is this the week it all clicks? On current evidence, it’s hard to see it.

Probable lineup Burnley: Coudet; Walker, Ekdal, Julio, Pires; Alleyen, Hatate; Edwards, Laurent, Bruun Laursen; Broja
Probable lineup Wolverhampton Wanderers: Sa; Trippier, Djiga, T Gomes, Konan; Doyle, Munetsi; Lopez, James, Mane; Neave

Our prediction: Burnley – Draw No Bet

Burnley are in better form, playing at home, and facing a Wolves side that’s scored three goals in five games and lost twice in a row. Wolves also carry a run of eight visits to Turf Moor without a win. Every recent signal points towards the hosts.

The reason we’re not backing a straight Burnley win is their home record. Four draws from five league games at Turf Moor tells you they struggle to finish teams off, and Wolves have been involved in plenty of tight, low-margin games this season. A draw is very much in play.

Draw No Bet covers that. If Burnley win, it lands. If it finishes level, the stake comes back. Given Wolves’ blunt attack and their missing striker, we don’t see them winning this one. Burnley Draw No Bet is our pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
