Aviron Bayonnais vs RC Toulon: Jean-Dauger kicks off the Top 14 again with a clear away-day imbalance
Two wins from 13 away trips last season. That is the record RC Toulon carry into Stade Jean-Dauger. It leaves the Var club down in 11th for away form in the Top 14.
Bayonne, by contrast, were a different beast at home. L’Aviron posted nine wins and four defeats on their own patch, the 10th-best home record in the league.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, 5 September at 19:05, in the opening multiplex of the 2026-2027 season. Canal+ and Canal+ Live will show the match.
The bookmakers have priced the gap, but not wildly. A Bayonne win is available at 1.68, Toulon at 2.35.
The warm-up game offered a useful clue about Basque sharpness. Bayonne put 47 points on reigning champions Stade Toulousain at Jean-Dauger before going down 54-47 to the four-time French champions.
That scoreline tells two stories at once. Bayonne can already score, but the defence shipped eight tries in one night.
The opening round of the Top 14 2026-2027 is being played on 5 and 6 September. Six matches are on Saturday, with the seventh on Sunday night.
This Bayonne-Toulon clash opens Saturday’s multiplex, alongside five other fixtures. Castres-Vannes, Lyon-Clermont, Montpellier-Pau and Stade Francais-Perpignan all start at the same time.
The opening multiplex brings six matches into one Saturday evening. The final fixture, La Rochelle-Toulouse, is set for Sunday at 21:05.
Bayonne therefore have a chance to put down a marker before Sunday’s headline act. A win at Jean-Dauger would send l’Aviron top of the table, at least for the night.
The regular season runs all the way to 5 June 2027. So picking up points on day one matters in a 26-round slog.
This Bayonne-Toulon fixture looks like a proper early test for both sides. Neither club had played a competitive match since the end of last season.
The play-offs still feel a long way off. The quarter-finals are scheduled for 12 and 13 June 2027, with the final on 26 June at Stade de France.
Bayonne, already dangerous at Jean-Dauger
Nine wins and four defeats at home last season: Jean-Dauger is still a ground most teams hate visiting. L’Aviron built most of their points there.
Pre-season backed up the idea that the attack is already firing. Putting 47 points on the reigning French champions, even in a friendly, is no accident.
But the 54-47 loss also exposed the big job still ahead. Eight tries conceded in one game is a flashing red warning with the season about to start.
Toulouse put out a hefty chunk of their internationals that night. Baille, Marchand, Dupont, Ramos and Capuozzo all started.
That level of opposition puts the points conceded into context. Against Racing 92 or Toulon, Bayonne’s defence will be under a very different kind of heat.
The season opener at home is the ideal chance to start fast. Five points from the off would put l’Aviron straight into the top half of the table.
Jean-Dauger also gave the French champions a decent test run. Toulouse scored eight tries there in their only summer rehearsal.
Bayonne will not face that kind of firepower every week. Their defence should get a much clearer read on where it stands after this first competitive outing.
Try it for $0.99.
Toulon, the road remains the problem
Two wins, one draw and 10 defeats on the road last season: Toulon’s away record leaves little room for spin. Only three clubs were worse away from home.
That 11th-place ranking away from home explains much of the 2.35 price on RCT. The market is not exactly backing them to turn it around overnight.
Toulon prepared in Auvergne. The Var side played a friendly against ASM Clermont in late August.
The schedule is brutal for RCT once autumn arrives. They face Racing 92 in mid-October, then go to Toulouse over Boxing Day in round 13.
The first fixture often sets the tone. A bad day in Bayonne would send Toulon into September under pressure.
Their best argument is that they are the underdog. With no real expectation in the Basque Country, RCT can at least arrive with a free swing.
Even so, the away-day issues need fixing fast. With 13 trips in a regular season, the road accounts for half the calendar.
Round 21 will bring the reverse fixture in the Var. Toulon will host Stade Toulousain then.
Boxing Day is another big date for the club. Round 13, scheduled for 26 and 27 December, takes them to Toulouse.
RCT will also meet Racing 92 in mid-October. That one will mark the return from suspension of Francilian winger Wame Naituvi.

Rugby Prediction Aviron Bayonnais vs RC Toulon
Our pick: Aviron Bayonnais to win
Toulon won only two of their 13 away games last season, losing 10. Nothing recent suggests that pattern will flip in round one.
Bayonne, meanwhile, put 47 points on the French champions on their own ground in pre-season. The Basque attack is ahead of schedule.
At 1.68, a Bayonne win at Jean-Dauger is still the most sensible call in this one.
in your pocket.

First of all, a word on our free predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We give an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never truly is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. And never touch money you need to live. Above all, do not chase losses. That usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your day, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, no matter how good the analysis is.
- Essential reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Plainly put: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet fails.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like Toulon’s, for example), a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, make sure betting is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
