The reason is simple enough: home advantage matters most when a season kicks off. A first game at home is, statistically, the best chance of the year to bank five points.
The real question is which side will arrive sharper. Clermont have built their build-up around a training camp and two friendlies, while Lyon are starting in front of their own crowd.
The opening round of the 2026-27 Top 14 takes place on 5 and 6 September. Six games are scheduled for Saturday, including this LOU-Clermont clash at 19:05.
The season then runs all the way to 5 June 2027 for round 26, the final matchday. The final is set for 26 June 2027 at Stade de France.

LOU therefore enter the new campaign in a fiercely crowded slot. Every result on the night will be judged straight against the rest.
The opening weekend ends on Sunday night with La Rochelle-Toulouse. LOU will know where they stand in the table before that one.
Even so, the 1.53 price puts LOU in the category of controlled favourites. Bookmakers are leaving plenty of room for a Clermont upset.

Five wins and eight defeats away from home: Clermont’s record hardly jumps off the page. And yet it was still the fifth-best away return in Top 14.
That tells you plenty about how hard life on the road is in this league. ASM are among the small group capable of taking points anywhere.
Their pre-season in Auvergne was built around a camp in La Plagne. The idea was to get the whole squad together before the friendlies.
Two warm-up games followed, against Stade Francais and then RC Toulon at the end of August. The plan was to build rhythm before the first competitive fixture.
Those two opponents also show the level Clermont wanted to test themselves against. Stade Francais and RC Toulon are both Top 14 sides.
By the start of their third week of work, the target was clear: be ready for the opener and keep developing their identity along the way.
The La Plagne camp had a simple purpose. Getting the full squad together before the warm-up games was the priority.
Clermont’s fixture list also has another marker later in the season. On round 26, 5 June 2027, ASM go to Racing 92.
That opening date had been known for a long time. Clermont have known since the schedule was published that they would start away at LOU.
