Angers vs Marseille: two sides in the bottom half, one long hoodoo
Twelfth hosts 13th at the Stade Raymond-Kopa on Sunday (kick-off 15:00 Paris time), and only a single point separates them. On paper, it’s a mid-table meeting. In reality, it’s a Marseille side in real trouble visiting a team that hasn’t beaten them in nine attempts.
The data paints a specific picture here. Angers have seven points from six games, Marseille six. L’OM have lost four of their six league matches, and they’ve also dropped both Europa League games, 4-1 at Besiktas and 1-0 to Olympiacos on Thursday night.
That’s a club that finished second in 2024-25 now hovering above the relegation scrap. Bruno Genesio’s side have won one of their last five league games.
Angers aren’t exactly flying either. They were thumped 5-1 at Brest last weekend, a result that wiped out the good feeling from the 2-0 win over Troyes before the international break. Stephane Gilli’s side also face eight straight fixtures against teams currently above them in the table, starting now.
So why lean on history? Because it’s stubborn. Marseille have won five of the last seven meetings, including a 5-2 win at this ground last January. Angers’ last victory in this fixture came at home in the 2020-21 season.
What does Angers’ defence look like without Jordan Lefort? That’s the question this game will answer early.
Angers: a 17-year-old in central defence after the Brest collapse
Jordan Lefort saw a straight red at Brest. He’ll serve the first of a three-game ban on Sunday, and the likely replacement is Mael Gernigon, a 17-year-old.
That’s a big ask. Centre-back Ousmane Camara took a knock last weekend and is also likely out, so the back line is being rebuilt on the fly against a visiting attack led by the division’s top scorer. There’s no sugarcoating it: that’s the weak point.
The home record hasn’t been a fortress either. Angers lost 2-0 to Lille and 2-1 to Rennes at the Raymond-Kopa, with the 2-0 over Troyes their only home win. Four goals scored, four conceded at home in the league.
Up front, there’s Prosper Peter. He’s scored in each of the last two league games and he’s already closing on last season’s five-goal tally. Usman Simbakoli is out with a groin injury picked up during the break, and Joseph Kalulu, Marius Louer and Amine Sbai all missed Tuesday’s training, so the supporting cast isn’t certain.
Context matters too. Angers finished last season four points above the relegation play-off spot without a win in their final nine games. The start this year has been better. Not by enough.

Marseille: one league win in five, but Gouiri leads the scoring charts
Four Ligue 1 goals. That’s Amine Gouiri’s tally, enough to top the division’s scoring charts, and he’s been cleared of a knock to lead the line on Sunday.
He’s the reason Marseille still look dangerous on a bad run. The 4-0 opening-day win over Strasbourg feels like a long time ago. Since then: losses to Monaco, Paris FC, Rennes and PSG, then a 2-0 win at Troyes last weekend that at least stopped the slide.
Europe hasn’t helped. Two games, zero points, five goals conceded. Genesio’s side are playing a heavy schedule without any rhythm, and that won’t get easier from here.
The injury list has some holes. Derek Cornelius is still recovering from a hip problem and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is out for at least another week with a thigh injury. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Tochukwu Nnadi are back in the squad after thigh and knee issues, which gives the midfield some bodies.
And then there’s this fixture. Unbeaten in nine against Angers, five wins in the last seven, five goals scored on their last visit. Marseille simply don’t lose to this side. That’s a pattern, not luck.
Probable lineup Angers: Lopes; Raolisoa, Biumla, Gernigon, Kalulu; Belkhdim, Belkebla, van den Boomen; Allevinah, Peter, Sbai
Probable lineup Marseille: De Lange; Bezahaf, Egan-Riley, Aguerd, Emerson; Abdelli, Kamissoko; Harit, Gomes, Paixao; Gouiri

Our prediction: Marseille to win
Break down the numbers and a clear edge emerges for Marseille, even in their current state. Angers have just conceded five, they’re without the suspended Lefort and probably without Camara, and they’ll likely field a 17-year-old in central defence against the league’s top scorer.
Marseille’s form is poor, and we aren’t ignoring it. But one of their two league wins came on the road at Troyes last weekend, and the head-to-head is about as one-sided as Ligue 1 gets: nine meetings without an Angers win, including 5-2 at this ground in January.
The market makes Marseille clear favourites here, and we agree. Check the price at your bookmaker before kick-off, but the away win is the call.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
