2026 World Cup: Colombia deny Uzbekistan a first-ever point on their World Cup debut
Not exactly a classic, even if they were largely on top, Colombia escaped the trap laid by Uzbekistan with a 3-1 win on Wednesday night at the World Cup. Los Cafeteros move to the top of Group K. Uzbekistan thought they had a shot at history for five minutes, but were finally put back in their place by a Colombia side in no mood to hand the Uzbeks a point in their first World Cup match. The favourites struck first through a brilliant Daniel Munoz finish in the 40th minute in a first half where Uzbekistan offered almost nothing — 28% possession, one shot, and not even on target. Maybe Fabio Cannavaro gave them a rocket at the break, because the White Wolves came out with far more intent and briefly started causing Colombia a few problems.

Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz end Uzbekistan’s hopes
Uzbek hopes were lifted by a fortunate Abbosbek Faizullaev goal after a rebound from an Eldor Shomurodov effort was kept out by the Colombia keeper in the 60th minute, but Luis Diaz quickly killed the comeback with a weak strike that the Uzbek goalkeeper should have done better with in the 65th minute. Far from giving in, Uzbekistan kept pushing right to the end, but any chance they had of a famous result disappeared when Jaminton Campaz wrapped it up deep into stoppage time in the 99th minute to seal Colombia’s 3-1 win.
With victory secured, Los Cafeteros go top of Group K, where Portugal and DR Congo drew 1-1 on Wednesday night.
