World Cup 2026: Ghana’s narrow escape as they edge Panama at the death
Ghana pulled off a late escape to beat Panama at the World Cup. Thomas Christiansen’s side actually came out swinging and put a shaky Ghana team under pressure from the start, but they were just a few minutes short of holding on for a famous point. Lawrence Ati Zigi had to be sharp early on to keep out a smart effort from Cecilio Waterman (2e). The Ghana keeper set the tone for the night, staying alert as Panama kept coming, including a strike from Jiovany Ramos (38e).
After throwing himself in front of everything, Ati Zigi took a knock to the thigh and needed plenty of time to recover (43e). He was eventually replaced at half-time by Benjamin Asare. Carlos Queiroz, clearly not impressed by what he was seeing from his Black Stars, got his side moving a little more in the second half. They were less asleep, though hardly convincing.

Semenyo quiet, but Black Stars get the job done before the big guns
Jordan Ayew was denied the chance to turn home a cross after a sliding challenge from a Panama defender (65e). But Ghana finally found a way through right at the end. While they’ve been underwhelming for months on the African scene, they at least got the result they needed. Still, Antoine Semenyo, the Manchester City star, is expected to be on another level.
Queiroz still has plenty of work to do before facing England (22 heures le 23 juin), a side of a very different class, and Croatia (23 heures le 27 juin), another heavyweight. But these three points are already huge in the race for the round of 16.
