The Knicks roll through Manhattan on June 18 for a celebration 53 years in the making

New York is ready for the Knicks parade, 53 years after the last title

The city is ready, and that almost feels like an understatement. On Thursday, June 18, 2026, the New York Knicks will roll through Manhattan to celebrate their NBA title. It is a first for the franchise, which had never staged a parade for either of its championship wins in 1970 and 1973.

A whole generation has come and gone since then, then another. The Knicks have been through plenty in that time, sometimes flirting with contention, more often drifting far from it. This time, they return as champions, with an entire city riding with them.

Broadway turned into a street party

The parade will follow the usual route for New York’s biggest sports celebrations. It is set to begin at Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan, before heading up Broadway to City Hall in the heart of downtown.

Once there, the players are due to be welcomed by local officials and handed the symbolic keys to the city. Municipal buildings will be lit in blue and orange during the day, while the Canyon of Heroes will host the main highlights as the team passes through. The city has also put a huge security operation in place. The NYPD has deployed more than 10,000 officers to oversee the parade, with specialist units, drones and dog teams spread across the route.

A day that goes way beyond sport

Over the past few days, the players have been making the rounds and soaking up the spotlight. Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart were spotted at Yankee Stadium, where they were handed the honour of throwing out the first pitch at a Yankees game. The reaction was instant, almost automatic, as if the city had been in celebration mode for days already. Behind the scenes, the political and media side of the story has also been creeping in. Donald Trump sent an invitation to the White House to New York Knicks owner James Dolan, and the franchise accepted, even if the date has yet to be set. Another stop in a sequence that’s already drawn plenty of attention.

By the end of the day, the party is expected to continue at City Hall. Alicia Keys is due to perform Empire State of Mind, in a setting where sporting emotion blends into something bigger, almost communal. Out on the streets, there isn’t really a script. Just a city waiting to watch its champions go by, and fans for whom this moment no longer belongs to stats or seasons gone by. In New York, a day like this rarely ends up feeling like just another ceremony.
