2026 World Cup: Ayyoub Bouaddi, the Morocco breakout who turned heads against Brazil

He had a choice to make, and he made the right one. Just over a month ago, Ayyoub Bouaddi was still torn between France U21s, the country of his birth, and Morocco, the homeland of his parents. The Lille midfielder has now thrown his lot in with the Atlas Lions, and his World Cup debut against Brazil quickly backed that call. In New Jersey, the youngster was one of the men behind Morocco’s hard-earned draw with the Selecao (1-1), catching the eye with his ability to win the ball under pressure and always pick the smart option: a sharp pass, a calm dribble, even with top-level opponents closing in. It was the kind of maturity that stunned everyone else, but not those who have followed him for years.

Born in Senlis and developed at Creil before joining LOSC in 2021 at just 13, Bouaddi has raced through the ranks. On October 5, 2023, Paulo Fonseca handed him a start in the Conference League against KI Klaksvik. At 16 years and three days, he became the youngest player in UEFA European competition history and Lille’s youngest since 1981. Fonseca was delighted: “We have discovered a player for the future.” Barely two weeks later, he made his Ligue 1 debut and became the youngest player of the 21st century in France’s top flight.

His former coach Georges Tournay had already summed him up: “Ayyoub was an obvious pick: tall, comfortable in midfield, with excellent technique and great vision. He was destined for success, a bit like Raphael Varane.” Those words were spoken long before Bouaddi became a real force in European football.

On his 17th birthday against Real Madrid, Genesio was not worried

The moment that really cemented Bouaddi’s status in Lille folklore came on the night of October 2, 2024. On his 17th birthday, against reigning European champions Real Madrid, with Bellingham, Valverde, Tchouameni and Camavinga lined up opposite him, the young midfielder showed ice-cold composure. He completed 43 of 44 passes, controlled the middle of the pitch, and helped drive the Lions to a 1-0 win before a roaring Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Bruno Genesio, his coach at the time, made no secret of his admiration. “He is a boy with his head firmly on his shoulders. He has the talent to play at this level.”

A few weeks later, in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Juventus, Bouaddi was named man of the match again. In front of his back four, he looked astonishingly assured for someone so young. LOSC, who tied him down until 2027, have one of the most promising players of his generation on their hands. And Morocco, having persuaded him to wear their colours, already look to be reaping the rewards at exactly the right time.
