Tennis: Zverev locks up world No. 1 with a Vienna win

One quarter-final away from the top

Alexander Zverev needed a quarter-final spot in Vienna to guarantee the world No. 1 ranking, and he got it earlier today. The German beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 in 1 hour 36 minutes at the ATP 500 event, breaking serve in the opening game and again in the last game of the match.

The win guarantees Zverev at least 9,450 points when the new rankings come out on Monday. That is exactly what Jannik Sinner has, but the German wins the tiebreak on Grand Slam titles this season, two to one. Zverev, 29, took Roland-Garros and the US Open this year.

A first-round scare, and a short list of names

The route there was not smooth. In round one he needed more than three hours to get past Spain’s Martin Landaluce 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (13/11). He trailed 5-2 in the deciding tiebreak and saved four match points before winning it.

Zverev becomes the 30th man to hold the top spot since the ATP rankings began in 1973. His rise comes in a season when Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who dominated recent years, missed a large part of the calendar through injury, according to RMC Sport.
