Seven hits in a single inning
Seven hits. One inning. It had taken the Yankees three games to collect that many.
New York cracked the game wide open in the eighth against Boston. Five runs came in a blur, and Ben Rice put the finishing touch on it with a two-run single. Final: 9-2, second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Rice drove in three on the night. Amed Rosario started the rally with an RBI single, Austin Wells followed with a two-run knock.

Bello never got a grip on it
The game had tilted well before the eighth. Three runs in the third, all of them on Brayan Bello. Rice knocked in the first, Luis Garcia Jr. brought home the second on a fielder’s choice, Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a sacrifice fly.
Garcia Jr. finished with three hits. Rookie Spencer Jones ground out a 10-pitch at-bat in the sixth and drove in a run at the end of it.
Thirteen hits on the day for New York, against seven across the previous two games of the series combined. Bello wears the loss: four runs in four and a third.
Fried is back, Lombard is not
Max Fried came off the injured list for this one. A bone bruise in the left elbow had already taken two months out of his season. Three and two-thirds innings, one run, three hits, 39 strikes on 63 pitches. A cautious return, but a return.
Boston had taken the opener 6-0. Nick Sogard led off the third with a homer, Willson Contreras tripled in the eighth. None of it carried over.
George Lombard Jr. walked off in the third with a right knee problem, hurt checking a swing an at-bat earlier. The Yankees shortstop is booked for an MRI at NewYork-Presbyterian.
Season series level at six apiece. New York sit three games clear of Boston for the top American League wild-card spot.
