WNBA: Mercury bury Toronto behind a season-best 15 threes

Fifteen from deep, and the old franchise mark was 13

Thirty-four attempts from behind the arc. Fifteen went down.

Phoenix put 101 points on Toronto and never trailed, running out 101-69 winners over the Tempo. The three-point number is the one that stands out: a season high for a team whose previous best was 13. Sami Whitcomb went four of six from range for 14 points, both season bests for her.

Six Mercury players reached double figures. Noemie Brochant and rookie Shay Ciezki both finished on 15, Marta Suarez added 13, Maddy Westbeld 12, Lexi Held 11. Alyssa Thomas dished 12 assists. The bench alone produced 49 points.

Over at halftime, and then it got worse

58-35 at the break. By the fourth quarter the margin had stretched to 47.

Phoenix scored 28 in transition and turned 16 Toronto giveaways into 24 points. Kara Dunn, playing her first WNBA minutes, dropped nine including three from deep.

Neither roster was whole. Kahleah Copper, averaging 21.3 points, warmed up and was then ruled out with a sore left ankle. Kelsey Plum missed a third straight game. Toronto were without Marina Mabrey and her 20.8 per night for a sixth consecutive game, and Brittney Sykes was shut down for the season back on 21 August.

Two teams counting down the calendar

The result ends a four-game losing run for Phoenix, now 14-26. At home they are 6-14, the worst home record in the league, which makes this particular blowout an odd one. Toronto, in their expansion year, sit 11-29 with 16 losses in their last 17.

Isabelle Harrison kept the scoreline from getting silly, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. That is five straight games in double figures for her, three of them double-doubles. Kiki Rice has hit 10 or more in nine consecutive outings.

Phoenix take the season series 2-1. The league now pauses for 17 days for the FIBA World Cup, with games resuming on 17 September.
