Werder Bremen vs Augsburg: five games in, and the Swabians are still scoring at least twice
Augsburg have scored at least two goals in each of their five competitive games this season. No other German club can match that level of attacking consistency right now.
That return has brought seven points from three Bundesliga matches for the Swabian side. They sit two behind Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund, the only unbeaten teams in the division with nine points apiece.
Werder Bremen head into round four with four points and 10th place. One defeat, one win and one draw tell the story so far.
Kick-off is set for Saturday 19 September at 3.30pm at the Weserstadion. It is part of the afternoon multiplex.
Daniel Thioune kept Bremen up last season. Manuel Baum pulled off a similar rescue job at Augsburg before settling his side into mid-table.
So both coaches come with the same stamp: firefighters. Their teams, though, are at very different stages of the rebuild.
Bremen can claim a third win in five games across all competitions on Saturday. Augsburg, meanwhile, are trying to keep an unbeaten run alive.
The contrast is clearest in the numbers: the Swabians have scored in every game this term, while Bremen have swung from a 3-1 win over Leipzig to a 4-1 thumping at Freiburg.
This one comes down to a simple question: can Bremen’s back line, missing four players, contain the league’s only attack that has not drawn a blank?
Werder Bremen: real bounce-back ability, but a defence leaking goals
Bremen conceded four goals at Freiburg on the opening weekend. It could hardly have been a worse start.
They had, to be fair, begun the season with a 3-0 German Cup win over Luneburger Hansa on 22 August. Any optimism from that result did not survive the first league weekend.
The response came at home to RB Leipzig, beaten 3-1 at the Weserstadion. Eren Dinkci, Niclas Fullkrug and Marco Grull were on target in that win.
The trip to Cologne showed the same fight. Trailing at the RheinEnergieStadion, the Green-Whites dug out a 1-1 draw after the break.
Fullkrug has now scored three goals in four competitive matches since returning to the club. He also got the equaliser in Cologne.
The downside is obvious in the goals-against column: six conceded in three league matches. That puts Bremen among the most porous defences near the top half of the table.
The injury list makes things trickier in midfield, with Jens Stage (thigh) and Senne Lynen (groin) both out. Thioune is expected to pair Youri Regeer with Ludovit Reis in the engine room, with Chuki in the No 10 role.
The left flank is hit hardest, with Felix Agu (calf) and Moussa N’Diaye (groin) both missing, which should hand Olivier Deman a start. Keke Topp will not play again until 2027 after an anterior cruciate ligament rupture, while Justin Njinmah is still troubled by a thigh problem, leaving much of the attacking burden on Fullkrug.
Try it for $0.99.
Augsburg: unbeaten start and an attack that keeps delivering
Augsburg opened their league season with a 3-0 win over Schalke 04. They followed that with a 4-1 victory away to Eintracht Frankfurt.
That result in Frankfurt tells you plenty about the level Manuel Baum’s side have reached. Scoring four away from home against that kind of opposition is no fluke.
Their run of four straight wins ended against Bayer Leverkusen. Augsburg led, were then pegged back in front, and finally conceded a late equaliser from Patrick Schick in the 89th minute.
The draw cost them a few places in the table, but it extended another run. Augsburg have scored at least twice in every game since the restart.
The overall record is still four wins and one draw from five games in all competitions. There is no defeat on the sheet yet.
Baum already pulled the club out of a relegation scrap last season before guiding them to a quiet finish in mid-table. This summer’s step up is very real.
Their away record matters here too: four wins from their last five competitive trips.
Tim Breithaupt (toe), Faik Sakar (ankle) and Sima Suso (muscle injury) are out, while Anton Kade remains a doubt. Noahkai Banks, Calvin Brackelmann and Chrislain Matsima are expected to form the back three, with Marius Wolf and Hennes Behrens covering the wings.
Probable Werder Bremen XI: Hein ; Arthur, Freud, Pieper, Deman ; Reis, Regeer ; Dinkci, Chuki, Grull ; Fullkrug
Probable Augsburg XI: Dahmen ; Banks, Brackelmann, Matsima ; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens ; Fellhauer, Ibrahimovic ; Gregoritsch
Bundesliga prediction Werder Bremen vs Augsburg
Our tip: Both teams to score
Augsburg have not failed to score this season, and their floor is two goals per game. That consistency is up against a Bremen defence that has already shipped six in three league matches.
Werder, for their part, have found the net in all four of their competitive games, driven by Fullkrug’s three goals. Thioune’s absentees at the back, including both natural left-backs, only strengthen that case.
The Weserstadion already saw four goals when Leipzig came to town a fortnight ago. With both defences looking suspect, this does not look like a cagey affair.
Both teams to score is the strongest play in this one between Bremen and Augsburg.

First, a word on our free predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We’re giving an opinion, a read on the moment, never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The smart move is to stay disciplined. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all: do not chase losses. That usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your life, if it gets under your skin or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist service. That is what they are there for.
- At the end of the day, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never disappears, no matter how good the analysis is.
