Watford vs Burnley: two struggling sides, and only one of them has won a league game Championship

Eight Championship games, zero wins, four points. Burnley are bottom of the table, and they’re the only side in the division still waiting for a victory. That’s where the Clarets stand heading to Vicarage Road on Saturday, kick-off 16:00 Paris time.

A year ago they were sharing a division with Arsenal and Manchester City. Now they can’t beat anyone. There’s no sugarcoating it.

Watford aren’t exactly flying either. Alessio Dionisi’s side have lost four of their last five league games and sit 20th, only three points clear of 22nd-placed Derby. The last outing before the international break was a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City, settled by a single Dominic Ballard goal.

So this is a meeting of two sides under pressure. One has a home record worth protecting. The other has an away record that takes some explaining.

Burnley’s trips have been grim: 11 goals conceded in four away matches, the worst in the Championship, and a single point to show for it. Nicky Hayen keeps insisting the first win is around the corner. The supporters at Turf Moor stopped believing that some time ago.

Can Burnley finally turn up on the road? Probably not entirely. But they’ve shown they can score, and that changes the angle on this one.

Watford: two home wins, four home games with goals at both ends Watford

Vicarage Road is the only place Watford look like a Championship side right now. They’ve beaten Southampton and Preston there, both 2-1, drawn 1-1 with West Ham and lost 2-1 to Stoke. Six goals scored at home in four games. Five conceded.

Look closer at those scorelines. Watford have scored in every home match. They’ve also conceded in every home match. Not one clean sheet at Vicarage Road this season.

Away from home it’s a different story, and an ugly one. Four winless trips (one draw, three defeats), and the club’s last away league win came back in late February. That’s why Saturday matters so much.

The bright spot has come from the academy. Amin Nabizada has three goals in eight Championship appearances this season, which is a decent return for a youngster in a side that’s been short of investment. Without him, the supply line up front looks thin.

The break has helped on the injury front. Jordan Zemura and Marc Bola are both back in first-team training. Edoardo Bove, Jeremy Ngakia and Kwadwo Baah remain sidelined, though, so Dionisi still can’t pick from a full squad.

This isn’t a backline that holds. It hasn’t all season.

Burnley: eight games without a win, but they’ve scored in every one of their last six Burnley

Here’s the strange thing about Burnley. For a side that hasn’t won a league game all season, they keep finding the net. One goal at Norwich in a 4-1 defeat. One against Middlesbrough. One against Bristol City, one at Wrexham, one at Swansea, one against Derby. Six straight league matches with a goal.

The problem is what happens at the other end. Four goals shipped at Carrow Road, three at Swansea, and that 1-1 with Derby last time out slipped away in the 93rd minute when Mohamed Fuseini struck a late equaliser. Zeki Amdouni had put Burnley ahead. They couldn’t hold it.

That’s a problem they haven’t solved in months.

There’s quality in the squad, which makes it all the more puzzling. Amdouni comes back from the international break with three goals in four games for Switzerland. Kyle Walker and Jamie Vardy have seven Premier League titles between them. On paper, this isn’t a bottom-of-the-table side.

The injury list hasn’t helped. Hannibal Mejbri is out for up to four months with a hamstring problem, which strips Hayen of a midfield option. Jaydon Banel, 21, is back in training and could get his first start of the season. Josh Cullen is back on the grass and edging towards a return from the serious knee injury he suffered in December 2025.

Under-pressure head coach, fragile defence, a forward line that still produces. It’s a strange mix.

Probable lineup Watford: Ravaglia; Keben, Pollock, Coulibaly, Traore; Kayembe, Kyprianou, Maamma, Bravo, Nabizada; Doumbia
Probable lineup Burnley: Coudert; Roberts, Ahmedhodzic, Julio, Pires; Edwards, Laurent, Alleyne, Hatate; Brunn Larsen, Amdouni

Free Football Prediction: Watford vs Burnley

Our prediction: Both teams to score (odds 1.67)

The numbers don’t lie. Watford have scored and conceded in all four of their home league games this season. Burnley have scored in each of their last six Championship matches while conceding 11 times in four away trips. Two leaky defences, two attacks that always seem to find one. That points to goals at both ends.

Picking a winner is far harder. Burnley’s winless run makes them easy to oppose, yet the market has Watford at 3.00, which tells you nobody trusts the Hornets either. We’d rather lean on the one trend that’s held up week after week for both clubs.

Watford won’t keep Amdouni quiet for 90 minutes on current form, and Burnley’s back line hasn’t got through a single away game without conceding. Both teams to score is the call.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
