Viking vs Sabah – Free Champions League Prediction

Viking vs Sabah: three conceded in every Champions League game, against the unbeaten leaders of Azerbaijan Champions League

Sabah are top of the Azerbaijan Premier League with 20 points from eight games, six wins and two draws, and a goal difference of +17. They’re also 25th in the Champions League table on three points, eight places above Wednesday’s hosts.

Viking are 33rd with one point from three games. They lost 3-1 at Stuttgart, drew 3-3 with Bayern Munich in Stavanger on 13 October and lost 3-1 at Aston Villa eight days later, which means they’ve conceded exactly three goals in every league-phase match.

Kick-off in Stavanger is 20:00 UK time on Wednesday 4 November. Sabah are making their debut in the competition proper, and Viking reached the league phase by beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 at home after a 2-2 draw in Croatia.

The two sides arrive from different weekends. Viking lost 3-2 at Bodø/Glimt on Friday night in a game that could decide the Eliteserien title, while Sabah drew 0-0 at home to third-placed Qarabag in their last league match.

The bookmakers have Viking at 1.48, the draw at 4.75 and Sabah at 5.25. We think that’s a fair home price, and we’d back it, for reasons that come down to where Viking’s goals come from and how few Sabah have scored away from Baku in Europe.

Sabah’s one away game in the league phase ended 4-0 to Manchester United.

Viking: 62 league goals before Friday, and a back line that keeps leaking Viking

Morten Jensen’s side went into Friday’s trip to Bodø with 19 wins, two draws and three defeats from 24 league games, and 62 goals scored. They were still top of the Eliteserien after the defeat, and they’ve scored in 13 of their last 16 matches in all competitions.

The Bodø game showed both sides of them. Viking went behind to a Henrik Falchener own goal after four minutes and trailed 2-0 when Andreas Helmersen scored on 15, then turned it round through Kristoffer Haugen on 32 minutes and Erik Botheim on 39, before Jens Petter Hauge won it for Bodø two minutes before half-time.

The Bayern draw was the high point of their European campaign. Gianni Stensness scored in the second minute and Peter Christiansen added a second on 38, and after Harry Kane’s penalty and second goal and a Luis Diaz strike put Bayern ahead, academy product Herman Haugen equalised in the 90th minute from Zlatko Tripic’s cross.

At Villa Park, Christiansen scored again with a close-range volley, but Ross Barkley’s header, an Emiliano Buendia penalty and a Henrik Heggheim own goal settled it. Goalkeeper Arild Ostbo kept the score down with a save from Buendia.

Christiansen, Stensness and Tripic are the names to follow. Christiansen has scored in both of Viking’s last two Champions League games, and Viking have five goals in three league-phase matches, three of them at home.

Sabah: a first Champions League win at home, and one goal on their only trip Sabah

Valdas Dambrauskas’s side lost 4-0 at Manchester United on matchday one, then recorded the club’s first Champions League win, 2-0 against Slavia Prague in Baku on 13 October. Kaheem Parris scored the first from Ivan Lepinjica’s cut-back on 49 minutes, and Joy-Lance Mickels added a second from around 40 yards two minutes from time.

Goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov was the difference that night, with saves from Lukas Provod and Tomas Chory. A week later Sabah lost 2-1 at home to Borussia Dortmund, with Serhou Guirassy scoring after ten minutes and again on 53, either side of Aden McCarthy’s header from a Tymoteusz Puchacz cross.

Domestically they haven’t lost all season. The last three league games read 0-0 at Neftchi, 4-0 at Qabala and 0-0 at home to Qarabag, and Mickels leads the club’s league scoring with five goals.

The squad has plenty of qualifying experience behind it. Sabah came through rounds against KuPS, TNS, AGF Aarhus and Hapoel Beer-Sheva to reach the league phase, and they’ve kept six clean sheets in their last 20 matches.

The numbers away from Baku are the concern. Their European trips this season include defeats at Manchester United, AGF Aarhus and Hapoel Beer-Sheva, and Parris, the man who scored their first Champions League goal, has been their main outlet down the left.

Free Champions League Prediction: Viking vs Sabah

Our prediction: Viking to win @ 1.48

Viking’s two defeats and a draw in Europe came against Stuttgart, Bayern Munich and Aston Villa. Sabah are the first opponent in their league phase from outside the big five leagues, and Viking have scored 62 league goals in 24 games with Christiansen scoring in both of their last two Champions League matches.

The case against is Viking’s defence: three conceded in every league-phase game, three more at Bodø on Friday, and a Sabah side that kept Slavia out and scored against Dortmund. We accept Sabah will probably score. But their only Champions League away game ended 4-0, and their recent league form includes two goalless draws in three.

Viking are still waiting for a first league-phase win, and their only home game of the phase so far ended 3-3 against Bayern Munich after they led 2-0. Viking to win at 1.48 is our pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
