VfL Osnabruck vs Bayern Munich: the holders arrive ten days late 
Thirty of the 32 first-round ties in the German Cup were played between August 21 and 24. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, had their games pushed back because of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on August 22.
Bayern head to Osnabruck on Wednesday September 2 at 20:45, at the Stadion an der Bremer Bruecke. Dortmund opened the door the night before away at HEBC Hamburg.
The Bavarians come in with two official games and two wins. A 2-1 victory in Dortmund in the Supercup, then a 5-1 thrashing of Stuttgart on the opening day of the Bundesliga.
VfL Osnabruck are in Germany’s second tier, where they sit 14th after three matches. Three points, four goals scored, seven conceded.
The northern club did at least pick up its first win of the season last time out, scraping a 1-0 victory away at Bochum on August 28. That is their only clean sheet of the campaign.
This first round has already thrown up a major shock: SSV Jeddeloh II knocked out Heidenheim 5-2. Knockout football still does what it wants.
But the gap in quality is huge, and Bayern, with seven goals in two official games, have shown no signs of wobbling.
The first-round format sends professional clubs away to sides from regional cups or lower divisions. Bayern are no exception.
There are 32 matches in this opening round, involving 64 teams. The winner of the competition will book a spot in the 2027-28 Europa League.
So Osnabruck get the German holders in front of their own fans. They head into it with just one win from three league games.

Osnabruck began their league campaign with a 4-3 defeat away to Heidenheim on August 8. Seven goals in one match, four of them shipped.
The second game was even harsher. Beaten 3-0 at home by Magdeburg, they barely laid a glove on the visitors.
Those first two outings took their total to seven goals conceded in two matches. That is the obvious weak spot.
The trip to Bochum on August 28 brought the first positive note. A 1-0 away win, the first victory and first clean sheet of the season.
That result lifted Osnabruck out of the danger zone and up to 14th place. Three points from three games is still a poor return for a side now hosting the holders.
The key issue is the step up in class. A team conceding more than two goals a game in the second tier is now up against an attack that just hit five past Stuttgart.
Osnabruck have scored four goals in three second-tier matches. Three of them came in the same game, at Heidenheim.
The 3-0 defeat to Magdeburg remains their only home outing so far this season. No goals scored, three conceded in front of their own fans.
The win at Bochum did at least show Osnabruck can grind out a result. A tight 1-0 is really the only realistic script against Bayern.

Bayern kicked off their season with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, winning 2-1 away at Borussia Dortmund on August 22. A first piece of silverware on the road.
The opening Bundesliga fixture backed that up. Stuttgart left the Allianz Arena with a 5-1 hiding on August 28.
Four different players scored in that game: Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Diaz. The threat comes from everywhere, including the back line.
Across their two official matches, Bayern have scored seven and conceded two. They sit top of the Bundesliga on goal difference.
The club is used to these early-round ties against lower-league opposition. They come into this one already sharpened by two high-stakes games.
The only obvious risk is rotation. A changed line-up in Osnabruck looks likely, although that has rarely stopped Bayern from steamrolling this sort of fixture.

They won the Supercup away at Borussia Dortmund, one of their main rivals. That is about as good a sign of form as you need.
