Udinese vs Cagliari: five years without a Sardinian win against the Friuli side 
Cagliari have not beaten Udinese in Serie A since 2021, when they snatched a 1-0 win in Friuli. Five seasons on, the Sardinians arrive with the stronger start of the two.
Fabio Pisacane’s side have nine points from four games, good enough for fifth place. Udinese sit 13th with four.
Matchday five takes place on Saturday 19 September at 15:00 Paris time, at the Bluenergy Stadium.
Udinese come into this one with a game in hand and a painful memory. On Monday at San Siro, they led 2-0 after 16 minutes before losing 5-3 to Inter Milan.
James Abankwah opened the scoring in the ninth minute, with Jurgen Ekkelenkamp doubling the lead. The reigning champions turned it round inside 20 minutes.
It sums up Udinese’s structural problem right now: they can score against anyone, but they can’t hold on to a lead.
Cagliari, by contrast, have gone the other way. All three of their wins this season have come by a single goal.
So this is a clash between patchy attacking output and tight late-game management. That balance will decide what happens at the Bluenergy.
Udinese: eight goals conceded across the last two matchdays 
Udinese began the season with a 1-1 draw against Como before going to Monza and winning 3-2. The next two rounds changed everything.
A 2-1 home defeat to Lazio came before the upside-down drama at San Siro. Across those two matches, the Friuli side shipped seven goals.
Maduka Okoye still put in a busy shift on Monday, making seven saves. The Nigeria goalkeeper could do little about most of Inter’s goals.
Kosta Runjaic does, though, return to a ground where he has generally done well against this opponent. Since Cagliari’s 2021 win, Udinese have won five of the eight meetings, including three of the last five.
One caveat matters here: only one of those three recent victories came at the Bluenergy Stadium. Cagliari have taken two draws from their last three away trips there.
The injury list remains long, with Matteo Palma and Oumar Solet out with muscle problems, Alessandro Zanoli sidelined by a cruciate injury and Juan Arizala nursing a thigh issue.
Jakub Piotrowski underwent heart surgery early this month after his last appearance against Lazio on 7 September. The midfielder is not expected back before the international break.
Nicolo Zaniolo, absent since August, could return to the squad. Keinan Davis is the other key figure in attack.
The English striker has assisted in three straight appearances in September, against Venezia, Lazio and Inter. His ability to occupy defenders and bring others into play will be key for Udinese.

Cagliari: three wins from four and a clear plan 
Cagliari started with a 1-0 win at Parma before losing 1-0 at home to Inter Milan. They then beat Lecce 1-0 and followed that with a 2-1 victory at Atalanta in Bergamo.
That win in Lombardy is the standout result of their season so far. Going to the Gewiss Stadium and winning is no small feat in Serie A.
Across all competitions, the club have won six of their last seven matches, including the closing stretch of last season. Their momentum is as strong as any side in the middle of the Italian table.
Pisacane’s approach is built on tight matches and making the most of limited chances. All three wins this season have come by the narrowest possible margin.
On Saturday, Cagliari are chasing a third straight league win. The last time they managed that was in January, with victories over Juventus, Fiorentina and Hellas Verona.
Daniel Maldini is the face of that renewed sharpness. The forward has scored in two straight appearances, with decisive goals against Lecce and Atalanta.
Paul Mendy should join him up front after scoring twice in his last three outings. The pair offer something different, with runs in behind and movement between the lines.
The absentee list is still sizeable for the trip to Friuli. M’Bala Nzola, Yael Trepy, plus Mattia Felici and Riyad Idrissi, both out with cruciate injuries, are all missing.
Even so, the squad is deep enough to keep the shape that has worked over the past month. Elia Caprile keeps his place in goal behind a back four against Udinese.

Udinese have found the net in all four of their Serie A matches, including at San Siro where they hit the reigning champions for three. Keinan Davis has had a hand in a goal in each of his last three outings.
At the other end, the Friuli defence has conceded seven goals over the last two matchdays and comes into this one without Solet and Zanoli. Daniel Maldini and Paul Mendy are both in scoring form.
Cagliari have scored in three of their four league games and are not coming to the Bluenergy to sit deep and pray. Both sides should score.
