Torreense vs Sunderland: the giant-killers against a side still waiting for an away win Europa League

Torreense haven’t played in Portugal’s top flight since 1991-92. They’re sitting 15th in the second division right now. And yet they’ve already won a Europa League match this season, away from home, with ten men.

Sunderland, a Premier League club, are still waiting for their first away win of the campaign in any competition. That’s the contrast that frames Thursday night.

The match won’t even be played in Torres Vedras. Torreense’s ground doesn’t meet UEFA standards, so the “home” fixture moves almost 100km north to the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria. Kick-off is 18:45 Paris time.

On paper, this shouldn’t be close. Sunderland beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 on matchday one at the Stadium of Light, an Enzo Le Fee penalty settling it. Torreense won 2-1 at Lillestrom. Both sides sit on three points.

The data paints a specific picture, though. Sunderland have won just two of their eight matches across all competitions. They’re 17th in the Premier League, one point above the drop. And they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight away games, conceding 16 in the process.

Is that the profile of a side you trust on the road? Not entirely. But the gap in quality is real, and it should tell over 90 minutes.

Torreense: a cup-winning underdog with a well-drilled plan and a thin squad Torreense

The story starts with last season’s Taca de Portugal final. Torreense beat Sporting Lisbon to lift the trophy, and that’s how a second-tier club ended up in the Europa League league phase.

They haven’t looked out of place yet. The 2-1 win at Lillestrom on matchday one came despite finishing with ten men. Alejandro Alfaro opened the scoring, Manu Pozo got the other. The post-match message was about a “very well defined” plan to shut down Lillestrom’s set-piece threat. It worked.

Domestically, it’s a different picture. One win, three draws, two defeats from six games, 15th in the table. Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Tondela was chaotic: four red cards and a winner in the 100th minute. That’s not a squad arriving fresh or settled.

There’s also a quirk in the dugout. Head coach Luis Tralhao doesn’t hold a UEFA Pro licence, which says plenty about the scale of the jump this club has made.

Nuha Jatta is suspended after his red card in Norway, a real loss in midfield. Goalkeeper Adriel and defender Mohamed Ali Diadie are available despite domestic dismissals. Alfaro should sit alongside Amine Oudrhiri, with Joao Marques ahead of them.

Spirit isn’t the issue. Depth is.

Sunderland: four league defeats from six, no away win, and a growing injury list Sunderland

Four defeats in six Premier League games. One win, one draw. That’s Sunderland’s league record, and it explains why Regis Le Bris has talked openly about “big challenges” balancing two competitions.

The last two outings sum up the problem. A chaotic 5-3 defeat at Manchester City before the international break, then a flat 2-0 home loss to Brighton at the weekend. Le Bris has called for more “quality” and “composure” in the final third. Fair enough: that’s exactly what’s been missing.

Europe has been kinder. Sunderland’s first European campaign in 53 years started with that 1-0 win over AZ, a side in strong Eredivisie form at the time. The Black Cats can defend at home when they need to.

Away from Wearside, it’s a different story. No away win yet this season. No clean sheet in eight road games. That record takes some explaining for a top-flight club.

The injury list doesn’t help. Brian Brobbey, Dan Ballard and Habib Diarra are all out with hamstring problems, Romaine Mundle remains sidelined with a long-term knee issue, and Thomas Meunier is a major doubt after limping off against Brighton. Trai Hume or Malick Fofana could come in. Chemsdine Talbi isn’t registered for the Europa League squad.

Even with all that, the starting group should still feature Granit Xhaka, Le Fee and Isidor. That’s Premier League quality against a mid-table second-division side.

Probable lineup Torreense: Adriel; Bruno, Diadie, Volnei, Vazquez; Oudrhiri, Alfaro; Pozo, Marques, Jean; Abubakari
Probable lineup Sunderland: Roefs; Mukiele, Danso, Alderete, Methalie; Xhaka, Sadiki; Fofana, Le Fee, Angulo; Isidor

Our prediction: Sunderland to win (odds around 1.45)

Sunderland’s away record is the one real argument against them, and it’s a genuine concern. But the opponents they’ve been losing to on the road are Premier League sides. Torreense are 15th in Portugal’s second division and arrive off a bruising 1-0 defeat with four red cards in it.

The hosts’ plan worked against Lillestrom’s set-pieces, and they’ll make this awkward. Without Jatta, though, their midfield loses a key body, and their squad is already stretched by a domestic schedule that isn’t going well.

Sunderland have the better individuals in every line, even with Brobbey, Ballard and Diarra missing. A narrow away win is the logical conclusion, and at around 1.45 it’s the pick here.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal: and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
