A veteran punter arrives in Tennessee
The Titans needed a punter and found one with 17 seasons behind him. Tennessee signed 40-year-old Thomas Morstead to its practice squad Wednesday, three days after Tommy Townsend hurt his knee in a 27-24 home loss to Cleveland. Kicker Joey Slye took over punting duties once Townsend went down.
Morstead knows the head coach. He played for Robert Saleh when both were with the New York Jets. His most recent stop was San Francisco in 2025, and he has now suited up for five teams in a career that started in New Orleans.

Super Bowl ring as a rookie, still punting at 40
Morstead spent 12 seasons with the Saints, winning a Super Bowl as a rookie in 2009 and earning his only Pro Bowl selection in 2012. Over his career he has punted 1,004 times in 272 games, averaging 46.7 yards per kick with a 41.3 net. Only one of those punts has ever been blocked, back in 2011.
The Titans are 1-6 and visit Cincinnati, 4-2, on Sunday. Townsend’s knee injury is what opened the spot for Morstead.
