Tasmania JackJumpers vs New Zealand Breakers: a 40-hour turnaround against a depleted visitor
The Tasmania JackJumpers host the New Zealand Breakers at MyState Bank Arena in Hobart on Sunday 18 October, with tip-off at 6h00 Paris time. It is the second game of a Round 5 double for the home side in NBL27.
Tasmania lost 94-88 to Adelaide on Friday night, their first home defeat of the season. That result ended a stretch in which they had led the league, and it leaves them with roughly 40 hours to reset.
The Breakers arrive on the opposite trajectory. They beat the Sydney Kings 102-101 in Canberra on Wednesday and sit fourth on the ladder with four wins from seven games.
These clubs met at the end of last season, when Tasmania won 91-89 on a near buzzer-beater from David Johnson in the final 13 seconds. That margin shows how close the matchup has been, even if both rosters look different today.
The data points in two directions here: a home side with fatigue and a bruised record, and a visitor with momentum but a thin backcourt. The sections below weigh both before settling on a pick.
Tasmania JackJumpers Analysis
Tasmania entered Friday as the league-leading side, which explains why bookmakers priced them as favourites in Hobart against the 36ers. The 88-point output in defeat shows the attack still functions when the game tightens.
The loss itself was a late one, with the score level at 82-82 before Bryce Cotton scored eight straight points for Adelaide. Tasmania had led by 10 in the second quarter, so the damage came in the closing minutes rather than from a collapse over the full game.
Taran Armstrong produced 20 points and 10 assists, while Will Magnay added 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Dakota Mathias scored 14 and Josh Bannan 13 with 7 rebounds, though Bannan also committed 4 turnovers.
The injury list is the real constraint. Ben Ayre (hip flexor), Majok Deng (fractured lower leg) and Bryce Hamilton (ACL) are all out, which shortens the rotation on a short week.
The decisive point is the home floor. Tasmania stayed competitive against a hot Cotton for 38 minutes, and a Breakers side without its starting guards asks fewer of the same questions.

New Zealand Breakers Analysis
The Breakers hold a 4-3 record and are the reigning Ignite Cup champions. Their win over the Kings was their second Ignite Cup victory of the season.
That 102-101 result was far tighter than the game looked for most of the night. New Zealand led by 13 with under two minutes left, then needed a stop to survive a Sydney rally led by Torrey Craig, who finished with 28 points.
Sam Mennenga is the engine of the team right now, with 27 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting against Sydney. He has also become the first Breakers player to record 40 points and 18 rebounds in a single game.
Carlin Davison has filled the point guard role with 20 points and 14 assists, while Mojave King added 17 and DJ Vasiljevic 13. Parker Jackson-Cartwright (lower leg), Josiah-Jordan James (hamstring), Preston Le Gassick (neck) and Nelson Weidemann are all unavailable.
The decisive point is the road itself. A Wednesday game in Canberra followed by a Sunday flight to Hobart, with a makeshift backcourt and Charles Bediako limited to 12 minutes by fouls last time out, leaves little margin for a bad start.

Our prediction: Tasmania JackJumpers win
Tasmania lost on Friday only after Cotton’s late burst, and the same roster played the league’s best stretch of basketball before that. A home crowd and a clear motivation to answer the first defeat in Hobart favour the hosts.
The Breakers are missing their lead guard and a second import, and Davison is playing out of position as a creator. Fatigue from the Canberra trip compounds the issue, and tipsters expect the JackJumpers to be favoured by around 6.5 points.
Back the JackJumpers at home. Their size and depth with Magnay and Armstrong should outlast a short-handed visitor in the final quarter.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like Tasmania JackJumpers’s, for example), a player picks up an injury — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
