Sunderland vs Leeds United: Danso banned, Ballard out, and four straight league defeats at the bottom
Kevin Danso won’t play at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. The defender was sent off after 17 minutes at Bournemouth last Saturday, a 2-0 defeat, and serves a one-match ban, while Dan Ballard is out for around six weeks with a hamstring injury.
That leaves Regis Le Bris without two of his centre-backs for the visit of Leeds, with kick-off at 16:30 UK time. Sunderland have lost four Premier League games in a row and failed to score in three of them, and they sit in the bottom two with four points from seven games (W1 D1 L5, goals 6-14).
Leeds are seventh on ten points, from two wins, four draws and a single defeat, with nine goals scored and six conceded. Daniel Farke’s side drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Elland Road on Saturday, Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalising six minutes after half-time.
The two clubs met twice in the league last season. Sunderland drew 1-1 at home on 28 December 2025, then won 1-0 at Elland Road on 3 March 2026 through a 70th-minute Diarra penalty.
The longer record favours Leeds. In 12 Premier League meetings they’ve won eight, drawn one and lost three, and the meeting at the Stadium of Light before December’s draw was a 2-2 in the Championship in October 2024.
Sunderland’s Europa League form has run in the opposite direction to their league results. They beat AZ 1-0 at home and won 2-1 at Torreense, and they’re in Poznan on Thursday at 17:45 UK time to face Lech before this game. Brentford visit the Stadium of Light on Wednesday 28 October.
Leeds have no European fixture, and they’ve won once in their last seven games across all competitions. Their last three league games have produced five goals in total.
Sunderland: three home league games, two goals scored and no game with more than two goals
Sunderland have played three league games at home. They beat Fulham 1-0 with a Wilson Isidor winner, then lost 2-0 to Arsenal on 12 September and 2-0 to Brighton on 10 October, a game Brighton finished with ten men.
None of those three games went past two goals. At home, Sunderland have conceded at a rate of 0.8 goals per game in all competitions, and they haven’t had a match at the Stadium of Light where both teams scored.
The attack is the weakness for Sunderland. Brian Brobbey is the club’s top league scorer with three goals in 401 minutes, but he has a hamstring problem, and Le Bris has hinted only at a possible return this week. Isidor is being assessed day by day after a minor injury, and Thomas Meunier (hamstring) is expected to miss the game.
Romaine Mundle is out until early 2027 after meniscus surgery. Academy striker Tuterov started at Bournemouth with the senior forwards unavailable, and Enzo Le Fee, with one goal and 11 chances created, carries most of the creative load.
Le Bris is under pressure after the run of league defeats, and the schedule doesn’t help him. Rotation is expected in Poznan for Sunderland, but a Thursday game in Poland followed by a Sunday kick-off leaves little time to prepare a reshaped back line.

Leeds United: seventh on ten points, one win in seven across all competitions
Calvert-Lewin has four Premier League goals from 14 shots, eight of them on target, in 601 minutes. He scored against Manchester United on Saturday, scored in the 4-1 win over Newcastle on 14 September and has had a recent England call-up.
The 4-1 against Newcastle is Leeds’ biggest result of the season. Since then they’ve drawn 0-0 with Crystal Palace, a game in which Calvert-Lewin missed a penalty, lost 2-1 at Arsenal after Justin had put them ahead, and drawn 1-1 with United.
The defence has been reliable, with six goals conceded in seven league games and two clean sheets. The predicted XI has Muharemovic, Elvedi and Justin as a back three in front of Trafford.
Joe Rodon is out with a thigh injury and could return against Bournemouth on 31 October, and Mateo Joseph has a long-term ACL injury. Daniel James is training but remains a doubt with a lower-back problem.
Anton Stach has created ten chances and plays behind Calvert-Lewin with Okafor. Calvert-Lewin is on three yellow cards, two away from a suspension.
Probable lineup Sunderland: Roefs; Mukiele, Alderete, Reinildo, plus one centre-back in for the suspended Danso; Sadiki, Xhaka; Le Fee, Rigg, Hume; Tuterov
Probable lineup Leeds United: Trafford; Muharemovic, Elvedi, Justin; Gudmundsson, Tanaka, Ampadu, Bogle; Okafor, Stach; Calvert-Lewin
Free Premier League Prediction: Sunderland vs Leeds United
Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals (1.73)
We’re taking under 2.5 goals at 1.73. Sunderland’s three home league games have produced five goals in total, and they’ve failed to score in three of their last four league matches.
Leeds have conceded six in seven league games, and three of their last five league fixtures stayed under the line. The 4-1 against Newcastle is the exception to the pattern, and we’d weigh the six weeks since then more heavily.
Sunderland will be without Danso and Ballard at the back, which is the argument for goals. Against that, they’re also short of strikers, with Brobbey and Isidor both doubts, and they play in Poland three days before. We expect a tight game with two goals or fewer.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
