Ligue 1: Strasbourg splash 20M euros on teenager Karim Coulibaly

A final deal with Werder

Strasbourg have got their defender. According to Sky Germany, a final agreement has been reached with Werder Bremen for the transfer of Karim Coulibaly. Racing will pay a fixed 20 million euros, with a further 5 million in add-ons. The German club have also secured 10% of any future sale.

Talks went right down to the wire. The 19-year-old defender’s medical is expected imminently.

The fee tells its own story. Twenty million up front for a player with one full season behind him ranks among the biggest outlays in Strasbourg’s recent history for a defender.

Werder Bremen land a tidy win

The German logic is hard to ignore. Bremen picked up Coulibaly on a free in summer 2024, arriving from Hamburg with no fee attached. Two years later they are banking 20 million guaranteed and still hold a sell-on clause.

In between, Coulibaly did the business on the pitch. He played 27 Bundesliga matches last season and scored once, at an age when most centre-backs are still learning their trade in the reserves. That early consistency is what pushed the price up.

The Bundesliga remains a market where French clubs go hunting for young players already tested at a high level, not just empty promises.

Strasbourg put the money back to work

This move has not come out of nowhere. Racing are in the process of selling Diego Moreira to AC Milan for a far bigger fee, and the club still have several other deals live before the window shuts.

Strasbourg’s model is plain enough: sell high, reinvest quickly on young talent. Coulibaly arrives carrying expectation that goes well beyond his age.
