Spain vs Czech Republic: the world champions chase a perfect start in Oviedo UEFA Nations League

Spain host Czech Republic on Saturday 3 October at the Estadio Nuevo Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo, with kick-off at 20:45 Paris time. This is the third matchday of League A Group 3 in the Nations League.

The table already tells a clear story. Spain lead the group with six points from two games, while Czech Republic sit bottom without a point after two home defeats.

Luis de la Fuente’s side are the reigning world and European champions. They beat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final in July, and they have carried that level into the new season with wins over England and Croatia.

For Czech Republic, this is only their second campaign in League A, after their first in 2022-23. They earned promotion from League B last time, but the step up has been painful so far.

The bookmakers reflect that gap. The Football Faithful lists Spain at 1.07 to win, with the draw at 11.00 and a Czech win at 29.00, which makes the straight home win almost unplayable from a value point of view.

That is why the real question here is not who wins, but how the match will unfold. Goals and margin are the angles worth exploring, and the recent numbers on both sides give a fairly clear direction.

Spain Analysis Spain

Spain opened their campaign with a 3-2 win over England at Wembley on 26 September. Three days later, they beat Croatia 4-1, which takes their record to nine straight wins in all competitions according to Sports Mole.

The longer streak is even more striking. SportyTrader counts 40 matches unbeaten within 90 minutes for Spain (30 wins, 10 draws), a run that goes back to a friendly against Colombia in March 2024.

Lamine Yamal has been the standout performer of this international window. The Barcelona attacker has scored three goals and provided one assist in the two Nations League matches so far.

At home in this competition, Spain are ruthless. They have won their last four Nations League home games and scored at least three goals in each of the latest three, while their last seven Nations League matches have all produced more than 3.5 goals.

De la Fuente is expected to rotate. Aymeric Laporte should return in defence, while Rodri and Dani Olmo are set to come back into midfield, and Nico Williams could start in attack.

There is one absence to note. Ferran Torres has withdrawn from the squad with an ankle injury, but Spain’s depth means Mikel Oyarzabal can lead the line without any real drop in quality.

Czech Republic Analysis Czech Republic

Czech Republic have started their campaign with two defeats on home soil. They lost 2-1 to Croatia on 26 September, then fell 2-0 to England three days later.

Those results extend a difficult spell. SportyTrader notes four defeats in their last five games, with one draw, and the side has conceded two or more goals in six of their last seven competitive internationals.

The record against Spain offers little comfort. The two sides have met seven times and Spain have never lost, with their last meeting ending in a 2-0 Spanish win in the Nations League in June 2022.

There was a 2-2 draw in Prague during that same 2022-23 campaign, which shows the Czechs can compete on a good night. Away from home, though, they have lost four of their last six Nations League matches, with two draws.

Team news makes the task harder. Pavel Sulc is suspended after his red card against England, and Adam Karabec is unlikely to feature after being forced off before half-time in that game.

Alex Kral and Ondrej Lingr could come into the starting eleven. Adam Hlozek, who has five goals for the national team, is expected to lead the attack once again.

Probable lineup Spain: Simon; Pubill, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Ruiz, Rodri; Yamal, Olmo, N. Williams; Oyarzabal
Probable lineup Czech Republic: Kovar; Chaloupek, Hranac, Krejci, Slama; Sadilek, Cerv; Radosta, Kral, Lingr; Hlozek

Our prediction: Spain to win and over 2.5 goals

A Spain win at 1.07 offers no value, so we combine it with the goals market. Spain have scored three or more in four of their last five Nations League games, and Czech Republic have conceded at least twice in six of their last seven competitive matches.

The absences of Sulc and Karabec weaken the Czech side further, while Spain will bring back Rodri, Olmo and Laporte alongside an in-form Yamal. Sports Mole predicts a 3-0 home win, and SportyTrader goes even further by backing over 3.5 goals.

Our pick sits between those two views: Spain to win with at least three goals in the match. None of our sources quoted a price for this combination, so check your bookmaker before kick-off.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
