Santa Clara vs Benfica: the league’s tightest defence against its highest-scoring attack Liga Portugal

Benfica’s last two league visits to the Estádio de São Miguel ended 2-1 in February 2026 and 1-0 in February 2025. They won both, by a single goal each time, and they’ve won eight of the last ten league meetings with Santa Clara overall, with two draws. The next one is on Monday 26 October, kick-off 18:45 UK time, and it’s a far more even contest on current form than that record suggests.

Santa Clara are fourth with 18 points from eight games, five wins and three draws, and they haven’t lost in the league. They’ve conceded four goals, level with Porto for the fewest in the division, and kept five clean sheets. For a club that finished 13th last season, that’s a big shift in a few months.

The one blemish came in the cup. Santa Clara lost 3-2 after extra time to third-tier Mafra in the Taça de Portugal, and Dje Tavares, who had put them ahead, was sent off after a second yellow card. That leaves Petit without one of his midfielders for this game.

Benfica are one place and one point above them, second with 19 points and five behind Porto. Marco Silva’s side have won six of their eight league games and scored 24 goals, four more than anyone else. Their only defeat came at Porto, 3-1, and they’ve won five of their last six league games. In Europe they won 4-1 at Omonia on Thursday, a third win from three in the Europa League league phase that puts them top of the table.

So the question is fairly simple. Can a defence that has let in four goals all season hold a forward line that has scored 24? Benfica should still be favoured, but the margins in recent games on the island have been narrow, and Benfica arrive with a thinner squad than usual.

Santa Clara: unbeaten, five clean sheets and three straight shutouts at home Santa Clara

Santa Clara’s home record is the base of all this. They’re unbeaten in their last six league matches at São Miguel, with four wins and two draws, and they’ve kept clean sheets in the last three of them. Rio Ave were beaten 4-0 there, Famalicao 1-0, and Braga held to a 0-0.

The goals at the other end have come in small numbers. Twelve in eight league games is modest, and three of their last six league matches finished 1-0 or 0-0, including the 1-0 at Casa Pia last time out. Petit’s side win games by keeping the scores low.

Tavares’s suspension removes one of the midfielders. Vasconcelos and Daniel Borges are the likely replacements, with Vasconcelos expected alongside Ferreira and Ribeiro in a midfield three. In goal, Lucas Franca is expected back, with Neneca likely to drop out.

There’s also good news on Matheus Araujo, who is back in training after a cruciate ligament injury and could be involved if the staff decide he’s ready. Paciencia should lead the line, with V Lopes and B Lucas either side of him.

Santa Clara have conceded two goals in their last six league games: one in the 2-1 win at Arouca and one in the 1-1 draw with Alverca. Benfica are a level above both of those sides, but a team that defends this consistently doesn’t usually lose by three or four.

Benfica: 24 goals scored, but a midfield thinned out by injuries Benfica

Benfica have won their last three matches in all competitions. They beat Vitória de Guimarães 2-0 last weekend, with Alexander Bah scoring first and Georgiy Sudakov adding the second two minutes after coming off the bench. Then came the 4-1 at Omonia.

The attacking numbers are the best in the league by a distance. Twenty-four goals in eight matches, including 4-0 at Moreirense and 3-0 at Marítimo, and only seven conceded. They’ve won away from home with plenty to spare against weaker sides.

The difficulty is the injury list, and it’s concentrated in midfield. Enzo Barrenechea is out after meniscus surgery, Leandro Barreiro isn’t expected back until after the November international break, and Jakub Kaminski and Daniel Banjaqui both have muscle injuries. Vangelis Pavlidis, who left the Omonia game injured, will be assessed before kick-off.

Without Pavlidis, Duran is likely to start up front, with Prestianni, Sudakov and R Silva behind him and Aursnes and Palhinha in the two deeper midfield roles. It’s still a strong side, but it played on Thursday in Cyprus and now travels to the Azores for a Monday evening game.

That 3-1 defeat at Porto is Benfica’s only league loss, and it came against the one side that matches Santa Clara’s defensive record. Santa Clara aren’t Porto, but they’ve conceded exactly as many league goals as Porto, four, and three fewer than Benfica.

Probable lineup Santa Clara: Franca; Soares, Pacheco, Fernandes, Romao; Vasconcelos, Ferreira, Ribeiro; V Lopes, Paciencia, B Lucas
Probable lineup Benfica: Soares; Bah, T Araujo, Lenglet, Dahl; Aursnes, Palhinha; R Silva, Sudakov, Prestianni; Duran

Free Football Prediction: Santa Clara vs Benfica

Our prediction: Santa Clara +1.5 Asian handicap (odds 1.72)

Benfica are the better team and priced around 1.36 to win, which is too short to be worth backing. What interests me is the margin. Santa Clara have conceded four goals in eight league games and kept clean sheets in their last three at home, and Benfica’s last two league wins at São Miguel were both by a single goal.

A heavy Benfica win is possible, given 24 goals scored and a habit of putting four past weaker opponents. But Pavlidis is a doubt, the midfield is missing Barrenechea, Barreiro and Kaminski, and the game comes four days after a European trip to Cyprus.

Santa Clara +1.5 at 1.72 wins on a home win, a draw or a one-goal Benfica victory. It only loses if Benfica beat the league’s best defence by two or more, something that hasn’t happened in their last two visits here.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
