Greene lands back on the injured list

Hunter Greene faces a long shot to pitch again this year. Reds manager Terry Francona said Thursday there is “probably a slim chance” the right-hander returns, a day after Cincinnati placed him on the 15-day injured list with soreness in his right elbow.

Francona told FOX19 in Cincinnati that the club will learn more once Greene gets a second opinion. The timing stung, as the news arrived on Greene’s 27th birthday.

A season that never found rhythm

Greene did not debut until July 4. Surgery to remove bone chips from the same elbow had sidelined him since late March. He made five starts, went 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA and struck out 33 over 27 2/3 innings. In his final outing on July 31, he gave up four runs on seven hits across six innings in an 8-7 win over Pittsburgh.

The record still points up. Greene carries a 3.82 career ERA with 650 strikeouts over 96 starts since 2022 and made the All-Star team in 2024. Cincinnati drafted him second overall in 2017.

What comes next

The Reds wait on that second opinion before they map out the rest of Greene’s summer. For now, they plan around a rotation without him.
