Real Madrid vs Villarreal: a leaky giant against a side that always scores
Two defeats in seven La Liga games. For most clubs that’s a decent start. At Real Madrid, under Jose Mourinho in his second spell, it’s a talking point that won’t go away.
Los Blancos sit fourth with 15 points, five wins and two losses, 18 goals scored and eight conceded. Villarreal arrive at the Bernabeu on Saturday 10 October in ninth, with two wins, two draws and three defeats. Kick-off is at 21:00 Paris time.
The gap on paper is wide. The bookmakers agree: Madrid are as short as 1.31 to win, with Villarreal drifting out to around 8.00. But this matchup isn’t really about who wins. It’s about how open it gets.
Both teams to score landed in four of Madrid’s last five matches. For Villarreal, it’s five from five. You don’t need a degree in statistics to see where that’s heading.
Inigo Perez, poached from Rayo Vallecano after taking them to a Conference League final, brings his intense, energetic style to Madrid for the first time as Villarreal coach. His side went into the break on the back of two straight 3-1 wins. Is this the night it all clicks for them? Probably not. But they’ll score.
Real Madrid: 18 goals in seven, but the back line is a patchwork
Dean Huijsen is suspended. Ibrahima Konate is out with a knee problem. Raul Asencio and Ferland Mendy are injured too, and Eder Militao is a fitness doubt. That’s most of a defensive department missing in one go, and Mourinho has to build a back four from what’s left.
The likely answer is Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger, Alvaro Carreras and Marc Cucurella. It’s a line that can play, but it hasn’t played much together. Against a Villarreal side that’s just scored six goals in two league games, that’s a real worry.
The results tell you everything you need to know about this team. They lost 1-0 at Real Betis despite generating 3.7 expected goals. They beat Inter 2-1 in the Champions League without ever looking comfortable. They won 3-2 at struggling Elche. Then Atletico beat them 2-1 just before the break. Wins, yes. Control, no.
Kylian Mbappe is the reason they keep finding a way. Seven goals in seven La Liga matches, one every 90 minutes. He picked up a slight knee issue on international duty, and if he doesn’t start, the goal threat drops sharply, with Rodrygo also sidelined.
Madrid’s last five games have averaged two goals for, and over 2.5 goals landed in four of them. That’s not a team shutting games down.
Nothing about this defence screams clean sheet.

Villarreal: six goals in two before the break, and they concede every week
Back-to-back 3-1 wins. That’s how Villarreal went into the international break, first at Malaga’s La Rosaleda and then at home to Levante. After a rocky start under a new coach, the Yellow Submarine finally looked like a side with a plan.
The rocky start was real, though. They lost 2-1 at home to Real Betis and went down 3-2 in Dortmund in the Champions League. Thirteen goals scored in seven league games, 12 conceded. They’ll give you chances, and they’ll take some of their own.
Perez’s football is aggressive and high-energy, very different from the more measured approach of his predecessor Marcelino. That’s great when it works. Against Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler in open space, it’s a gamble.
Santi Comesana is the main doubt after an ankle injury picked up against Levante. Losing him would hurt the midfield balance, and it would put even more on Pape Gueye, the club’s top league scorer with three goals from midfield.
Recent meetings make uncomfortable reading for the visitors. Villarreal haven’t beaten Madrid in the last five, four defeats and one draw. But they’ve scored in three of those five, including a wild 4-4 in May 2024 and a 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu in October 2025.
They don’t do quiet games.
Probable lineup Real Madrid: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Rudiger, Carreras, Cucurella; Valverde, Tchouameni; Guler, Bellingham, Vinicius Junior; Carlos Espi (Mbappe subject to fitness)
Probable lineup Villarreal: Gulacsi; Freeman, Pau Navarro, Veiga, Sergi Cardona; Buchanan, Saliba, Gueye, Alberto Moleiro; Ayoze, Akhomach

Our prediction: Both teams to score (1.49)
Madrid to win at 1.31 isn’t a bet, it’s a donation to the bookmaker’s margin. The real angle is Villarreal’s attack against a reshuffled Madrid defence missing Huijsen, Konate, Asencio and Mendy. Both teams to score has landed in nine of the two sides’ last ten combined matches.
Villarreal scored three times in each of their last two league games and have found the net in three of the last five meetings with Madrid. Madrid, for their part, haven’t failed to score in four of their last five, and Mbappe or not, Vinicius, Bellingham and Guler will create chances against a Villarreal back line that’s conceded 12 in seven.
Both teams to score at 1.49. Madrid probably win it. Villarreal almost certainly get one.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
