Real Betis vs Malaga: Isco’s penalties, a missing striker and a promoted side still waiting for a league win
Isco scored in three straight home games for Real Betis this month. He took two against Osasuna in a 5-2 win on 11 October, converted a penalty six minutes from time in a 3-2 Champions League win over Porto three days later, and then scored the only goal from the spot against Feyenoord on 21 October. Saturday’s visitors, Málaga, have won none of their ten league games.
That gap frames the match at the Estadio de La Cartuja, kick-off 17:30 UK time (18:30 in Spain). Betis are fourth on 20 points from six wins, two draws and two defeats, playing Champions League football and sitting four points off a top-three place. Málaga are bottom with five points from five draws and five defeats, with seven goals scored and 19 conceded.
Málaga came up through the Segunda División play-offs, beating Almería 2-0 away in the second leg of the final on 20 June after a goalless first leg, and this is their first season back in the top flight in eight years. The squad was rebuilt in July and August, mostly through loans and free transfers, and it still hasn’t found a way to win.
The pressure on Juan Francisco Funes is growing as a result. The club has publicly backed him and his contract runs to 2028, but reports in Málaga this week suggest that if they don’t beat Betis or Racing Santander and are still bottom at the international break, his position could come under review.
Both clubs have Copa del Rey ties this week. Málaga face Sporting de Alcázar on Tuesday and Betis go to Navalcarnero, so some rotation in midweek is likely, with both coaches keeping their strongest players back for Saturday.
Real Betis: 20 goals in four home games at La Cartuja, but no Cucho and no Bernal
Betis have played their home games at La Cartuja rather than the Benito Villamarín this season, and the matches there have been lively. The last four home fixtures produced 5-2 against Osasuna, 3-2 against Porto, a 5-2 defeat by Barcelona and the 1-0 win over Feyenoord, which adds up to 20 goals in four games.
The 5-2 defeat by Barcelona on 17 October left a mark beyond the score. Facundo Bernal, signed from Fluminense in July, was sent off on 54 minutes for a headbutt on Lamine Yamal and was handed a four-match ban. Betis plan to appeal, but as things stand he misses this game.
Up front, Cucho Hernández has a soleus injury and won’t be back until late November, which explains why Deossa started as the central striker in the goalless draw at Celta on Sunday. He hit the crossbar, Betis didn’t score, and their own goalkeeper, Álvaro Valles, was named man of the match.
Troy Parrott, signed from AZ for €16 million on 20 August, is expected to start through the middle, with Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli on the flanks and Isco behind. Abde has three league goals, the most in the squad, and scored against both Osasuna and Porto earlier this month.
Junior Firpo is a doubt with an adductor problem, which leaves Fran García, signed from Real Madrid on 8 July, as the likely left-back. Marc Roca and Pablo Fornals should start in midfield, with Dani Ceballos, who joined on a free on 2 September, also available. I’d expect Pellegrini to keep most of that group out of the cup tie.

Malaga: no wins in ten, 19 goals conceded, and Adrián Niño scoring most of what they get
Málaga have drawn five and lost five, and the defeats haven’t been close. They lost 3-1 at home to Villarreal on 17 September and 5-2 at home to Real Sociedad on 18 October, when Takefusa Kubo scored after three minutes and Mikel Oyarzabal added two in the second half.
Adrián Niño has four of Málaga’s seven league goals, including the opener at Alavés last Friday, when he finished on 44 minutes after a VAR check. Málaga held that lead until the 89th minute, when Aitor Mañas equalised, and that draw left them four points from 17th-placed Getafe.
Funes has lost several players to long-term injuries. Julen Lobete ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and is out until April, Aarón Ochoa has a torn meniscus and won’t be back before January, and Joaquín Muñoz has a soleus injury that rules him out of this match. Diego Murillo, Pablo Martínez and Juan Cruz are all doubts.
Most of the summer signings were short-term deals. Jens Cajuste arrived on loan from Napoli on 1 September, Adam Aznou on loan from Everton, Carlos Dotor on loan from Celta, and Fernando Calero, Juan Berrocal and Pablo Martínez on free transfers. Aznou and Dotor are both expected to start on Saturday.
This is the first league meeting between the clubs since April 2018, and Betis won each of the last four league games between them, including a 2-1 win at home in that most recent fixture. Málaga did win a pre-season friendly 3-1 in August 2025, but that was a summer game, played a division apart.
Probable lineup Real Betis: Álvaro Valles; Bellerín, Diego Llorente, Natan, Fran García; Marc Roca, Fornals; Antony, Isco, Abde; Parrott.
Probable lineup Malaga: Alfonso Herrero; Puga, Galilea, Recio, Rafita; Enríquez, Dotor; Larrubia, Aznou, Dani Lorenzo; Adrián Niño.

Our prediction: Real Betis to win (1.46)
Betis have won six of ten league games and three of their four most recent home fixtures in all competitions, while Málaga have yet to win a league match and have conceded 19 goals, the joint fourth-highest total in the division. The home win is available at 1.46, and I think it’s the right call.
The case for Málaga rests on Betis’ attack without Cucho, after the goalless draw at Celta, and on the five draws they’ve picked up, including a point at Alavés last week. That’s a fair concern, but Betis have scored at least once in every home game listed above, and Málaga conceded in each of their league games against Villarreal, Getafe, Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Alavés.
Isco’s penalties, Abde’s goals and Parrott’s first run as the main striker give Betis enough to beat the bottom side, even without Bernal and Cucho. Real Betis to win, at 1.46.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
