RC Vannes vs Stade Toulousain: zero points against four straight Shields

Vannes opened their season with a 29-20 defeat at Castres. The following weekend, the Bretons went down 26-12 at home to Montpellier.
Those two losses leave the club with no points after two rounds. No other Top 14 side is in that position at this stage.
The contrast with last season is sharp, because Vannes finished with the best home record in Pro D2, winning 15 times. La Rabine was a fortress at the lower level.
That fortress was breached at the first time of asking in the top flight. Only 12 points against Montpellier is a fair sign of the attacking rebuild Jean-Noel Spitzer still has on his hands.
Scoring is still the big problem for Vannes: 20 points, then 12, across their first two games, a return that simply won’t cut it in Top 14. The defence has held up a little better, with 29 and then 26 conceded.
The line-ups had not been released when this was written, either by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby or the club. Vannes are playing more for their ability to compete in front of their own fans than for the result itself.
Fifteen home wins in Pro D2, then zero points after two Top 14 rounds: the gap between the two divisions is plain in those numbers. Survival is still the club’s only stated goal.

Stade Toulousain: a 48-12 response after the La Rochelle setback 
Toulouse lost 30-27 at La Rochelle on opening day, undone by a penalty after the siren. They played well for long spells, but it all flipped on the final kick.
A week later, the answer was emphatic: 48-12 against Bordeaux-Begles at Ernest-Wallon. Forty-eight points against the side that had dominated the opening round – that is the reference point right now.
That win lifts Stade to fourth in the table, within immediate reach of the top. The targets for the season have not changed: a fifth straight Shield and a stronger Champions Cup run, a competition that has slipped away from them since 2024.
Away from home, Toulouse posted the best record in Top 14 last season with six wins in 13 trips. That total mainly shows how hard it is to win on the road in this league.
Their only away game this season ended in that three-point defeat at Marcel-Deflandre. Losing by three after a penalty at the death does not say much against their ability to travel.
Antoine Dupont still leads this group, and the points haul against Bordeaux-Begles suggests the attacking engine is running nicely. The line-ups had not been announced at the time of publication.
Six wins in 13 away games put Stade top of Top 14 on that specific measure last season. It is still the record of a side that loses most of its matches on the road, which tells you plenty about this league.
Vannes have one major card to play: La Rabine is a ground the four-time champions have never visited in Top 14. A 21:00 finale in front of a fired-up Breton crowd is about more than numbers on a page.
